Joyce Schaal

Joyce Schaal, 97, passed away peacefully at Ramsey Village on December 19, 2021. She was born in Story City, Iowa, on January 25, 1924, the daughter of Jesse and Esther Hall.

Following graduation from East High School in Des Moines, she married Richard Newman on November 19, 1944, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple lived in Clarion, Iowa, where she worked at Eyler Funeral Home, and a dental office. She was also an active member of First Lutheran Church in Clarion.

She moved to Seattle Washington where she worked in the banking industry for many years.

In the 80’s, she married David Russell “Russ” Schaal and resided in Belmond, Iowa. They spent their winters in Arizona enjoying the warmer weather and beautiful scenery.

Joyce was a talented artist who enjoyed painting the Arizona landscape and family portraits. She also loved to golf and was an avid bridge player. She loved her Norwegian heritage and visited family in Norway several times.

Joyce will be remembered for her generous heart and kind spirit. Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Kirstan (Bob) Myers; step-son, Lewis (Nancy) Schaal; step-daughter, Marietta (Ken) Rappaport; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as other loving family and friends.

In addition to her parents and siblings, she was preceded in death by her husband, Russ Schaal; son, Michael Newman; and her daughter, Roxanne Stone.

A celebration of life will be held in the summer of 2022.
