God’s gift to Thelma and Burleigh Newberg
Dan was born on April 30, 1947. Dan left us on December 5, 2021 to be with his parents. Dan devoted 52 years of his life to Hy-Vee. It was a family affair. Dan was in the Shrine and the Jester’s. Dan loved sports, Nascar, and football, especially the Packers. He cherished watching his grandsons play football for the Ankeny Hawks. He will be remembered as the Grandpa that never missed a game.
Left to cherish him are his wife, Sioux; his sister, Vickie (Clare) Bangs; children, Chris Newberg, Michelle (Jeff) Chiodo, Jimmy (Stephanie) Chiodo, Scot (Amy) Newberg, Talia (Ryan) Chaffee, and Jake Chiodo; niece, Jamie Bangs; and nephew, Jason Bangs. He was blessed with nine grandchildren. We will miss him so much. He blessed us with so many great memories, a beautiful family, and great friends.
There will be a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 10, 2021 at Staves Memorial United Methodist Church, 2747 E Madison Ave, Des Moines. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.
Memorials may be directed to the family. Dan’s wish was to divide them between the Shriners Hospitals for Children and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Scot, I was saddened to hear the passing of your dad. I knew Dan for at least 45 years. He was a legend when it came to running a meat shop. Looking back Dan was a youngster managing one of the top meat departments in the company in those days. He will be missed. Thoughts of peace and prayers to you and your family. Kevin Gass PDI

Sioux, Michelle and family, my heart goes out to all of you. I am so sorry for your loss. Dan was a very special man with a kind heart and always spoke kindly to me. Knowing all to well the pain you are going through, I am hoping your tears of sorrow turn to tears of joy and pray that you will be able to find peace, joy and laughter in all of the great memories you made throughout the years. You are in my thoughts and prayers. RIP Dan

Sioux and family,
Sending my heartfelt sympathy to all of you; may you carry all the special moments and cherish the good memories in your heart today and always.
My wish is that one day you will remember how lucky you were to have known his love, with wonder, not grief. Sending you my love at this difficult time. May Dan RIP.

When I turned 16, I was hired as a part time employee at the East Euclid Hy-Vee. I worked 30-40 hours weekly during what were my last 2 years of high school and my first 2 years of college (from January, 1970 through February, 1974). Dan was the meat manager in those days and 1 of my assignments was working for him. Dan was TRULY a great role model and a kind man. For 32 years now I have lived in Johnston where it was a GREAT pleasure to see him working at the Johnston Hy-Vee.
And in recent times, it has been so special to worship with Dan and Sioux at Staves Church. Dan was a fine man who was always kind to me from the time I met him in early, 1970. He will be missed. Rest in peace Dan.
