Leona "Maxine" Hall-Fischer
October 24, 2021
Leona "Maxine" Hall-Fischer earned her much deserved one-way ticket to her heavenly vacation on October 24th, 2021 at the age of 104. Maxine was born in Dallas County, Iowa, to Clarence and Bertha (Sheets) Coffin on May 27th, 1917.
Maxine attended Alleman High School where she was one of the first girls' 3 on 3 basketball players to make it to the State Basketball Tournament in Iowa. After graduating, Maxine worked hard all her life. She was a devoted mother who worked several different jobs in order to make sure Joanne and Bud grew up happy and had all they needed. Maxine worked as a Telephone Operator at Northwestern Bell before she retired. Upon retirement, Maxine enjoyed traveling, entertaining, cheering on her Iowa Hawkeyes, attending services at Bethany Reformed Church and spending as much time as she could with her beloved family and friends.
Maxine loved to love on people. She cared about the well-being and happiness of everyone she
encountered. She selflessly breathed life and wisdom into everyone who knew her. She had a zest for life and shared countless memories, generational advice, and words of encouragement each time you saw her. Maxine never left you without a big smile, a hug, an "I love you" and a "come see me again."
Maxine had a true passion for taking care of herself and was always put together. She had a love for the color red, enjoyed her beads and jewelry and always had perfectly manicured nails. Her clothes and shoes were always reflective of her fun and sassy personality and her skin was flawless. In case you were curious about her secret, Pond’s cold cream (with the BLUE lid) works wonders!
Maxine was a true gem who will be missed beyond measure. She was a kind and gentle soul who
enjoyed her relationship with Jesus. She was humble, optimistic and brought joy to everyone lucky enough to know her. Above all else, she cherished her family and all of their time together.
To know Maxine was to know the true definition of perseverance, love and grace.
She is survived by her two children: Joanne (Harold Sr.) Fees and William "Bud" Hall, stepson in-law Gary Fjelstad; Grandchildren Harold Fees Jr., Mark (Lori) Fees, Kristie (Rick) Van Zandt, Kelly (Chuck) Denger, Pamela (Kent) Smith and step granddaughter Kim (Brian) Fjelstad-Perry. Additionally, her legacy lives on in 14 great-grandchildren, 23 great-great grandchildren (#24 is on the way!) and 1 great-great-great grandchild.
Preceding her in death was her grandson Billy Fees; siblings Burton, Harold, Mary Ellen, Paul and Laddie; and her parents Clarence and Bertha.
Services will be held on Monday, November 1, 2021 at 11:00 a.m., at Bethany Reformed Church, 720 NE 52nd Ave., Des Moines. The family will greet guests one hour prior to services.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family in loving memory of Maxine.

Boy, I would have LOVED to be a fly on those Pearly Gates when Auntie Max arrived!! Having seen the going-ons and noise of a Coffin family reunion, I am surprised we didn't hear them down here! To even begin to tell you about the memories I have of times with her, I cannot do. There are FAR too many and as we all know, she made any time spent with her memorable. I do feel like I was blessed to have Grandma, Grandpa and Aunt Max living so close to us while I was growing up, though. Those simpler, lazier, and sweeter days will forever be held in my heart. Aunt Max was such a kind, funny (and FUN!!), caring, helpful, beautiful, and loving woman and Christian. While I was sad to hear that she had left us, I was so happy for her! She knew exactly where she was headed and was more than ready to go! So, Auntie Max, I love you, I'll miss you, but only until it is my turn. xoxo
