Stephen Paul Mead
Of Clive, Iowa
Stephen Mead, age 78, passed away on Thursday, October 21, 2021, in Keokuk, IA. He was born to Edmond and Kathryn (Howard) Mead on October 20, 1943, in Des Moines, Iowa.
Steve received his education at local schools and the University of Idaho. He was Architectural Editor of Better Homes and Gardens before opening his residential design firm.
He is lovingly survived by his wife of 47 years, Jill Abeloe Mead of Clive; son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Amber Mead; and grandchildren, Madison Mead, Devree Mead, and Cedar Mead, all of Maplewood, MN; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Gail Abeloe and Gary Sprader of Pacific Grove, CA.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Tuesday, November 2, at 11 am in the chapel at Lutheran Church of Hope, West Des Moines, with a luncheon to follow. Casual attire and masks are requested. The service may be attended virtually at Lutheran Church of Hope
To honor his memory, please consider performing an anonymous act of kindness. No flowers, please; Steve loathed funeral flowers. The organizations Steve supported include the Unity Point Powell Chemical Dependency Patient Assistance Program, Des Moines; Iowa Public Television; and Iowa Public Radio.
After sustaining brain injuries during surgery 17 years ago, Steve resided in a number of rehabilitation and care facilities. Finally, seven years ago, he was welcomed to Southeast Iowa Behavioral Healthcare Center, Keokuk, IA, and was served with dignity and respect, and as a beloved family member. We are grateful to the entire staff for the joy they brought back to his life and for the compassionate care they extended to our family.

Steve and I were friends. He designed a condominium project for me in West Des Moines in the 1980s and was a very pleasant fellow to work with. I was not aware of his brain injury after a surgery years ago as I no longer live in Des Moines, but would like to express my sincere sympathy to Jill.
