Dona Allen, age 91, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at Mercy Hospital. She was born the daughter of Franklin and Ruby (Oman) Boatwright on February 11, 1930 in Kansas City, Kansas, she was her daddy’s favorite.

Dona married the love of her life, Donald Allen on March 24, 1949 in Silver Springs, Maryland. The two of them later moved to Des Moines in the early 50’s. She worked various jobs throughout her years, primarily at Des Moines Public Schools and Department of Transportation. Dona was a devoted member of First Church of the Nazarene, where she made many lasting friendships. She was a Prayer Warrior for her family and friends along with praying for the needs of others. She was an avid reader, and wore out many Bibles.

Since her early years, she enjoyed taking trips down to Arkansas to visit family. Dona was a true southerner at heart! Cooking and baking brought her great joy, and was known for her delicious doughnuts. Above all else, she treasured time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. Dona will be remembered and live on through the hearts and lives that she has touched in her lifetime. She was loved by many.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving children, October (James) Smith, John Allen, Philip Allen, Deborah Allen, and Daniel (Theresa) Allen; sister, Bonnie (Russell) Price; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; 6 nieces; and 2 nephews.

Dona was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 53 years, Donald Allen; sisters, Audrey, Fran, and Ruth Ann; and brother, Johnny.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 28, 2021, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Interment will be held at Glendale Cemetery.
