Merle Jackson Powell “Jack”, 90, of Des Moines passed away peacefully September 18, 2021 surrounded by family.
Jack was born August 20, 1931 in Humeston, Iowa to Ivan and Florence Powell. He graduated from Corydon High School.
Jack enlisted in the Marine Corps January 16, 1951. After completing boot camp Jack was immediately sent to Korea. He was promoted quickly and after only 14 months in the service reached the rank of Sergeant.
Jack was discharged from active duty in June, 1952. He then served 7 years in the reserves.
For his service, Jack was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal and United Nations Service Medal.
Jack served in the Marine Corps League from 1981 through 2006. During that time he received 18 awards including the Distinguished Citizens Gold Medal, which is the highest award issued by the League. It’s is awarded only by the National Commandant to the National Marine of the Year. Jack was and always will be a faithful Marine - Semper Fidelis.
After leaving the Marine Corps Jack began a lifetime career in the printing industry. He was a man of strong faith who loved dancing, fishing, and the Iowa State Fair. He touched so many lives, was always a true gentleman, kind and cheerful, was always the life of the party. He was a blessing to all who knew him, but especially his family, who were close to his heart.
Visitation will be Thursday, September 23, 2021, 5-7PM at Hamilton Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street in Des Moines. Memorial service will be held Friday, September 24, 2021 at 9:00AM also at the funeral home followed by a graveside service at Humeston Cemetery in Humeston, IA
Memorial contributions may be made to the Marine Corps League in honor of Jack.

I am so sorry to hear about Jack. Bobby and I have so many great memories of Jack and Ramona and their generosity. We loved the whole Watrous and Marine Corp League families. I wish life did not have to change but it does.
