Robert Leigh Carlson

Robert Leigh Carlson, 89, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at his home on Saturday, September 18, 2021 under the care of Kindred Hospice. He was born May 12, 1932 to Axel and Lena (Withers) Carlson in Des Moines.

Robert was a free spirit who loved to travel, meeting new friends along the way and befriending strangers with his dynamic personality. He worked various jobs throughout his life, a true jack of all trades and for him, a master of many of them. He served in the Coast Guard and the Air Force and was proud of his service and fellow comrades. Robert’s greatest joy came from spending time with his children and their families and following his Green Bay Packers.

Robert is survived by his children, Stephen, Kevin (Julie), Kathleen, Robert, and Eric; grandchildren, Heather (Wesley), Jennifer, Justin (Beth), Shawn, Brandon, and Katelyn; great-grandchildren, Layne, Nicholas, Nathan, Cadence, William, Penelope, Anna, Madison, Chase, and Ryder; and a host of other family and beloved friends.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the VA Central Iowa Health Care System in Des Moines who treated Robert with compassion and respect.
