Service Details

Ruby Jo Frazier was born on April 24th, 1933 in Buxton, Iowa, to Elmer Buford and Joe Anna Bowers.

She was the fifth daughter born to that union. Her mother later remarried and to that union another sister was born.

Ruby has spent the past 85 years in Des Moines. She was Educated in the Des Moines Public School System. At the age of 50 Ruby earned her GED. She was employed at Generations Incorporated until she retired.

Ruby married the love of her life, Edward Vance Frazier, Jr. Ruby was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. During her years as a youth she was a member of Union Baptist Church. She was a member of Iowa Association of Colored Women's Club. Ruby enjoyed playing cards. You could always count on an all-night until dawn bid wiz game at one of the sister's house.

Ruby loved being a mom and grandma, and couldn't get enough of her grandchildren. She loved spending time with family, and every summer Ruby, Edward and the kids took a traveling vacation and when the kids were grown and became parents, the grandkids often took the places of Ruby and Edward's children in the RV. Another routine was that every Saturday morning when R&B was heard playing in Ruby's household, it was cleaning day - no sleeping in. That routine carried over into daughter JJ's (Jacquetta) household with her children as well.

On August 18th, 2021, Ruby was called from labor to sweet, sweet rest. She has joined her husband Sonny, as she called him, her son Luigi, her parents Joe Anna and Elmer and her grandmother, Julia Harris, who raised Ruby and her sisters after their mother passed. Ruby had also survived her sisters, Mary Carter, Margaret Kirby, Bernice Jewett, Phyllis Saunders- Scott, and Anna Mae Cooley Buckner. In passing, Ruby is also joining 1 grandchild and 4 great-great children.

Left to cherish Ruby's memory are her children Ronald J. Frazier, Jacquetta J. Davis-Harris, Derek Frazier and Ruby's foster daughter Marva Pickett Hughes Fife? Also she leaves 3 brothers from her father's remarriage (Elmer, Victor and Anthony Buford), 19 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 32 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, August 25, 2021, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Thursday, August 26th, also at the funeral home with burial to follow at Glendale Cemetery.
