Betty Lou Lujan
July 21, 2021
Betty Lou Lujan was born Oct 1, 1934 in Independence, IA to William Lloyd Sewell and Sevilla (Clute) Sewell. She was the youngest of three siblings, and grew up on a farm. After graduating from high school, she worked for the phone company in Independence. She met and married her sweetheart, Mike Lujan of Oelwein, IA, in 1954. They lived in several locations and settled in Des Moines, where they raised their four children.
Betty Lou was a devoted homemaker. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, crafting, fishing, and being part of the Red Hat Society. She loved spending time with Mike, and together they enjoyed 56 years of marriage, family vacations and attending their grandchildren’s events.
At age 37 she experienced the Love of Christ and accepted Him as Savior. She raised her family to know and follow Jesus. She was a member of Grace Church in Des Moines for over 30 years. She enjoyed sharing the love of Christ, and always had a warm welcome for everyone she met.
Left to cherish her memory are her four children: Debra (Larry) Kirstein, Diane (Jon) Watsabaugh, Dawn (Michael) Hiatt and David (Jolyne) Lujan; nine grandchildren: Katie (Doug) Omundson, Michael Kirstein; Tyler and Evan Watsabaugh, Anna (Brandon) Kohler; Nathan (Jessica) Hiatt, Erin Hiatt, Lauren (Joshua) Benton; Emmy Lujan. Also five great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews whom she loved very much, as well as many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings Lois Brown and Bertrand Sewell and her husband Mike.
Surely everyone here has his or her own special memory from their time spent with Betty Lou.
The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers at Holland Farms Senior Living and Hospice of the Midwest for the love and care they showed to Betty Lou during the past several weeks.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established. Please direct gifts to the family.

When we were new to Grace I started attending a Tuesday morning Bible study snd Betty was sitting next to me and was so gracious and welcoming.
We eventually were in a small group together snd she was truly a prayer warrior and wonderful Christian lady.
I still miss her warm smile and friendship chats.

My love 💘 and prayers for Bettys family. Betty was a lovely and sweet lady. We went to Grace Church together for years and were in the same small group for a long time. Betty knew her Bible and knew and loved her Lord. Betty has gone to Heaven to be with Jesus for all eternity. .Those of us that have received the Lord as our Lord and Savior will join her there when our life on earth is over.
