Mary Joanne Taber

Mary Joanne Taber, 79, died Friday, June 18, 2021 at her home. She was born July 6, 1941 to John and Mable Hiatt in Des Moines.

Mary Jo was always a tom boy and loved to be outside. She would build things out of wood, mow the yard, and do whatever work needed done. Mary Jo had a special place in her heart for dogs, especially her service dog, Jersey.

Mary Jo worked at Burger King on NE 14th for many years and had the joy of taking care of her mother in her final years.

Mary Jo is survived by her daughter, Cindy (Erick) VanHorn; grandchildren, Dustin and Brittany; siblings, Donna Hiatt and Verne Hiatt; and a host of other family and beloved friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leroy Taber; and brothers, William “Gene” and Ronald Hiatt.

Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW, Altoona. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday June 24, 2021 at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW, Altoona with burial to follow at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Des Moines.
