Judith Losh
December 04, 2020
Judith Losh, 77, died on December 4, 2020, at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines. She was born in Hampton, Iowa on November 23, 1943, to Harold and Minnie Griffith as the second of three girls, including older sister Carol and younger sister Mary and grew up primarily in Mason City, Iowa.
In high school, Judy played bassoon in the orchestra and was a twirler for the marching band. She was a member of the Future Nurses club and Rainbow Girls. After graduating high school in Mason City in 1962, she attended Iowa Methodist School of Nursing and graduated in 1965.
Judy married high school sweetheart Rodney Losh in 1965 and soon started a family with the arrival of Michael, Brian, and Garrett. Through the early years, the young family lived in several locations in Iowa, including Des Moines, Marion, Cedar Rapids, then Altoona for many years, where they were active members of the Altoona United Methodist Church.
Judy’s nursing career in Marshalltown and Des Moines was put on hold during her sons’ early childhood, but she returned to nursing in 1981 at Iowa Methodist Hospital. After being a very active member of the La Leche League organization, which advocates breastfeeding, she became Iowa’s first International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and helped to establish a breast milk bank for infant intensive care. She was honored with the “100 Great Iowa Nurses” award in 2005. She retired as a supervisor in 2008.
After retirement, she moved with Rod to Waukee to be closer to two of her sons’ growing families. She was very involved with caring for her grandchildren and enjoyed attending many of their sporting, music, and other activities.
Judy is survived by her sister Carol (Terry) Sampson and sons, Michael (Anne) of Rochester Hills, MI, Brian of West Des Moines, and Garrett (Jill) of Urbandale; daughter-in-law, Melissa Losh; grandchildren, Maura, Griffith, Haley, Aiden, Devin, Carter, Claire, Morgan, Adam, Maeve, Zachary, and Kate; and a host of other family and friends.
There will be a brief prayer service for family and close friends at 2:00 PM Friday, December 11, 2020 outdoors at Altoona Cemetery. Following, a public visitation will be held from 4pm to 6pm at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW.
Memorial contributions may be directed to UnityPoint - Taylor House hospice or Altoona United Methodist Church in loving memory of Judy.

Judy and I grew up together in Mason City. I knew her family well and spent time in their home. When I was a student at Drake, I was in a class with Rodney. Judy and Rod lived in Des Moines when my husband and I moved there with our young daughter. We reconnected and enjoyed being together again as families. Judy and I stayed in touch through the years, and I will miss hearing from her. I extend my sympathy to all of the family.

Dear Losh Family,
Your mother/grandmother, was instrumental in our second sons, first 33 days of life at Blank NICU. When Samuel David was born on Oct. 9, 1982, 3# 6 oz., 29 weeks at Iowa Methodist Hospital, your cousin Lisa (Sampson) Ewoldt (married to my brother John) called us immediately to tell us that her Aunt Judy would be very helpful to us. We remember Judy coming to the room to welcome us and assure us of the care that Blank NICUs staff would give Sam and us.
Since Judy was the NICUs lactation consultant, I [Joanie] was more than willing to work with her to see that Sam had a good start nutritionally. Sam had very few developmental issues and just needed time to grow! After the first week then, Judy proposed an experimental study that I would come to the hospital daily and breastfeed him thru the day and his NICU nurse would gavage feed him thru the night.
With many prayers, Sam and I became a pretty efficient team with consistent 2-hour feedings. Sam gained stamina and weight steadily and came home, on Nov. 12th at 4# 10 oz. The experimental study was a success and by Christmas, his original due date, he was 7 ½ pounds. We have always felt blessed by Judys wonderful encouragement, cheering us on thru those hard days.
Today, Sam is 6-7 tall and an engineer. He and his wife are now blessed and so thankful to have a son, Grant David, 6 months old.
To think how many families she blessed with her concern and care!
Lord, thank you for Judy Losh, a lover of life!
Our Condolences,
David and Joanie Stineman
Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. I Cor. 15:57

Judy was truly an inspiration and such a wonderful advocate for countless mothers and babies through the breastfeeding programs she started and worked so tirelessly to strengthen through the years. I personally am so grateful for the many years I got to work with her and get to know her in our roles in the NICU at Blank/Iowa Methodist Hospitals. I even was blessed to be able to work with Judy's daughter in law, Melissa, and her little triplets who lived in the NICU for the first weeks of their lives!! It was a real treat to get to know Brian, Melissa, Claire, Carter and Morgan. What a little trio they were....little breastfeeding champs! Judy was such a great cheerleader and helper to them then, and for the rest of her wonderful life.
I am so sad to hear of her passing......the world will miss such a beautiful soul. May God comfort you all and give you the assurance of knowing you'll be reunited with her and your Dad again in paradise.

Judy was part of our neighborhood Friday group that met at Jordan Creek to walk and then socialize. She also walked our circle daily, stopping to visit and comment on flowers etc. This past Easter she noticed my outdoor decoration and came over with a small needlepoint pillow she thought i would enjoy. It was so thoughtful. I am so sorry for your loss. She will be missed. My sympathy to you all.

Judy was the Coordinator of Leader Applicants for La Leche League of Iowa, and the one who mentored me in my applicaion process to becme a La Leche League Leader, in 1979. The number of lives she touched, and as a result the number of lives those she mentored also touched, is beyond measure. She made a difference in many people's lives. What a legacy! Sincerest smpathy to all of you.

I am so sorry to read of Judy's passing. Judy and I spent many years working to improve breastfeeding promotion and support in Iowa. She taught me so much! I can still hear her laugh in my mind. Iowa families benefited from her passion and commitment as did many lactation professionals.

Judy's presence on earth will be missed not only by family and friends, but co-workers.
I worked with Judy in PostPartum at Methodist Hospital. Her dedication, experience, knowledge and passion was evident every day with every mom who wanted to breast feed their infant. I looked up to her and was commited to helping the moms because of her enthusiasum.
Sorry for your loss, she was too young.

I worked with Judy for many years in maternity at IMMC. She was such a resource for young nursing mothers and in training nurses to better assist and advocate for those mothers. She was such a great person to work with- caring, generous and a great sense of humor. Thinking of her family.

I graduated with Judy from Iowa Methodist School of Nursing and for 3 years we lived on the same floor. She was an excellent student and a lot of fun. She was very instrumental in putting together our 50 year Memory Book. May God comfort you in this time of loss. Joan Herr Darr Winona Lake IN
