Elsie Mitchell

Elsie Mitchell, 99, passed away on June 26, 2009 at the Altoona Care Center. She was born on August 20, 1909 in Lund, Sweden.
In 1913, at the age of four, her family immigrated to the United States and settled in Des Moines. She was raised on the south side and graduated from Lincoln High School. Elsie met Dale Mitchell while both were students at Lincoln and were married in 1929. She was a homemaker until later in life when she began cooking in the school cafeterias and finished her career as a cook for Dahls Stores.
Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, Anna and Eric as well as her two siblings, Eric and Mildred; she was also preceded in death by her husband, Dale and daughter, Charlene. Elsie is survived by her sons, Bob (Betty), Jim (Marilyn) and Jack (Barbara); and daughter, Patty (Frank) Sarcone. She will be missed by her 16 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 28, 2009 at Hamilton's Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Private family burial will take place at Elm Grove Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family which in turn will be directed to the Altoona Nursing & Rehabilitation Center to express the family's great appreciation.
