Darlene Louise Cave, Hubby-Rungee 88, surrounded by her family passed away unexpectedly Oct. 5, 2020 in Fort Dodge, Iowa from a massive stroke which caused a brain aneurism.

She was the 3rd child born to Clinton Forest Cave and Mabel Ardith Simonton on May 10, 1932. Darlene was born and raised in Redfield, Iowa. She was a 1950 graduate from Redfield High School and was baptized in the Redfield Christian Church. In her senior year in high school she began writing to a pen pal, a soldier in the US Army. This stroke of the pen would set the course of her life.

On June 1, 1950 she was united in marriage to that soldier, Bernard Richard Hubby. This union would be blessed 10 times over. They would begin their life together in rural Madrid, Iowa near Bernard’s family homestead and the Hubby Bridge. Their family grew and was blessed with five children during their time in Madrid. One being too precious for this world. Terry James, their second son, whom God called home. They would relocate to Redfield, Iowa, Darlene’s hometown and build their life together. Five more blessings would be bestowed upon them. After 22 years of marriage Darlene’s first love passed away. Leaving Darlene with 6 children under the age of 18. This was a challenge most people would find daunting, but she did her best.

Darlene would marry again to Clyde Elmer Rungee. They made their home in Boone until Clyde’s passing in 1995.

From an early age Darlene was blessed with the creative gene. She began writing poetry in grammar school and became an award winning, published author. She was a member of the International Society of Poets. The National Library of Poetry awarded her the Silver Poet Award in 1989 and The Golden Poet Award In 1987 and 1990. The brush of a quill was not Darlene’s only talent. She was a confectionary artist. Creating wedding cakes fit for a princess and holiday cookies that will be passed down for many generations to come as will her design talent that reached from interior design to crafts.

Darlene was a collector of gnomes and sun catchers. In her early years she loved to dance with Bernard. She loved Bingo and her yearly trips to Branson, MO to see the shows, especially the Presley’s. Cinnamon roasted pecans will always bring the warmth of her personality to life whenever we have them.

Being the last of her immediate family, Darlene leaves us all with the gift of family history, stories and priceless memories that are recorded in our hearts, mind, and Family Tree. It is in this place she and those she joins will live forever.

Darlene is preceded in death by her parents, Clint and Mabel Cave, her siblings and their spouses, Lola and Willie Love, LaVern Cave, Donald and Kaye Cave; husbands, Bernard & Clyde; her children, Terry and Susan Cook; her daughter-in-law Patty; her grandchildren, Richard and Dee Anna Hubby; her great-great- grandson, Sebastian; her fur babies, Boots & Toker and grand -fur babies, Windup & Tinky.

She leaves behind to mourn her passing her children, Mark of Fort Dodge, IA; Rick (Pam) of Redfield, IA; Bob of Corning, IA; Diana Miller (Jerry) of West Des Moines, IA; Keith (Maria) of Urbandale, IA; Sandy (John) Selby of Des Moines, IA Craig (Deb) of Peru, IA; and David (Maria) of Corning, IA; 21 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and 10 great- great- grandchildren.

Services will be held at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, IA on Friday, October 9th, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. with visitation the evening prior from 5 to 7 p.m.
