Service Details

Robert D. Neuendorf (Bob), of Altoona, passed away on Thursday April 2, 2020 at the age of 74. Bob was born on June 22, 1945 in Des Moines.

Bob graduated from East High School in Des Moines where he spent his younger years playing ball, toting his bebe gun, and pulling pranks. He later meant his wife Connie (Gonner) Neuendorf through mutual friends while scooping the loop downtown. Bob is a purple heart veteran, and was drafted to Vietnam. He and Connie were married before he left for basic training in 1966. They were together for 53 years and had one son, Robert Neuendorf.

Bob was hired by the Des Moines Public School District shortly after his military service. He was employed there for about 30 years and retired in 2000. He then got a part time job delivering parts for Carquest. Bob liked to stay busy by pursuing his hobby of going to car shows and showing old classic cars. Bob had many classic cars throughout his life, and passed this hobby down to his son. The two have worked on many cars together.

Bob was known for telling jokes and funny stories about his life as a kid and his time in Vietnam. He wanted to make people laugh, especially children. Whenever a young kid was around, Bob would do whatever he could to make the child smile. He would sing funny songs that he made up, teach them how to crack their nose, and tell them the picking your seat joke. He was so excited when the news came that he was going to be a grandfather. He fit that role perfectly, and was a great grandfather that would stop by all the time with doughnuts, keychains, his car trophies, or any other item he thought might be fun. He spoiled his grandchildren immensely.

Bob loved going out to eat. His favorite restaurants were Latin King, Taco House, Now or Later, and Smokey Dee’s. He and Connie often spent weekends by going out to dinner and hitting up Prairie Meadows afterward. His smile, helpful attitude, and loving personality will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife Connie Neuendorf, his brothers Joe Hutzell (Dixie) and Jerry Shepherd, his son Robert Neuendorf (Rhonda), and his two grandchildren Kyle and Courtney Neuendorf. Place of internment is Ankeny Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, October 9, 2020, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service.
