Richard Howland

Richard James Howland, age 76, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 7, 2020 at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines.
Dick was born November 11, 1943 in Geneva, Illinois to Francis E. and Marie K. (McKinnon) Howland, where he lived for the first five years of his life. He has been a resident of the Des Moines area since 1948. Dick married Jon Ann Marcon in 1963, and to his union three daughters were born – Kimberly, Michaele, and Teresa. He worked as a carpenter for Younkers for over 23 years prior to his retirement and was a member of Local 106 Carpenters’ Union where he served as an officer. Dick loved fishing, working in his wood shop, and traveling. He enjoyed the holidays and his greatest treasure was spending time with his precious grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jon Ann Howland; daughters, Kim Howland, Michaele Dirksen, and Teresa (Greg) Loffredo; four grandchildren, Megan Loffredo, Nick (Cassandra) Loffredo, Matthew Dirksen, and Joshua Dirksen; and one great-grandchild, Monty Loffredo.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents and his son-in-law, Phil Dirksen.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., followed immediately by Dick’s committal service at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 12, 2020 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines. Cremation will follow. Inurnment will take place at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery at a later date.

I am so sorry for your loss. I enjoyed talking with Mr. Howland and even getting to know his parents a little years ago. Such a nice man. Praying for peace for the whole family during this difficult time.

So sorry to read this. Your dad was such a good guy with a great sense of humor. (Thus the Christmas cards I received over the years) I still have the golf ball holder he made for me. He was a talented carpenter. He will be missed. My sympathies to all of you.

Richard was a wonderful Uncle to my brothers and I. He made us feel so welcomed and loved. We always knew he would be there for us and our Mom. He will be dearly missed.
