Bill Saunders, 83, died May 16, 2009 at home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday May 20, 2009 at his church, Immanuel United Methodist Church in Beaverdale. Burial will follow at Lincoln Cemetery in Granger, IA.
Bill was born in Hopkinton, IA on Aug. 18, 1925 the only child of John & Hattie Saunders. He graduated high school from Delhi, IA after growing up in Delaware, IA. After marrying his childhood sweetheart Delphine, they moved to Cedar Rapids where Bill worked for Culver Motors and Allen Motors as a car salesman. After a short time as a service station owner Bill joined Airkem and had a rewarding career of 34 years in the sales and service business.
Bill's life after retirement was filled with his love of gardening and helping others. He became a master gardener and shared his passion with everyone including the women at the Mitchellville Correction Facility instructing them in how to grow their own food. Bill always had a good word for all mankind and always found something of value in everyone he met.
Bill is survived by his wife of 64 years, Delphine and three children: Wendell(Connie) Saunders of Des Moines, Wanette (Jim) Smiley of Ankeny and Wallace (Julie) Saunders of Phoenix AZ. and daughter-in-law Elaine Saunders ; 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, William Jr.
Visitation will precede the funeral at 10:00 A.M. at the church, 2900 49th St. Des Moines. Memorial contributions may be made to his church.
