Ronnie Lee Purcell, 71, passed away July 23, 2020 at MercyOne Medical Center.
Ronnie was born August 25, 1948 in Belmond, Iowa. He grew up in Goldfield, Iowa. In his teens, he moved to Johnston, Iowa where he excelled in athletics. In his adult years, Ronnie enjoyed playing basketball and softball. He was an avid music lover.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ronald and Jean Purcell; and brother, Randy Purcell.
Ronnie is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Sharon Purcell; son, Lance Purcell; daughter, Nicole Purcell (Josh); granddaughter, Avery Schooley (his Peanut); brothers, Tim Purcell (Lynnda) and Dan Purcell (Karen); sister, Carol Davis; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, August 3, 2020 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Private graveside services will be held at Murray Cemetery in Murray, Iowa.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the MercyOne Des Moines COVID-19 Response Fund in loving memory of Ronnie.

Ron was a fun guy to know in high school and DMACC played softball when attending DMACC and afterwards Sorry I missed the funeral

My condolences to the family. I knew Ron from him running the pool league a lot of years. We had some interesting talks about music.Ron was a goodhearted man, he will be missed.

Sharon, I am so sorry to hear of Ron's death. It has been so long since we have met with friends that I haven't known what is happening. I hope the when this pandemic ends our friends can gather again.I will keep your family in my prayers.

To Ron's Family. Ron was best man when Ray and I got married, another entire lifetime. I haven't seen Ron in many years, and although Ray and I went in different directions, life just happens. I thought about Ron over the years and remembered the fun times we had as youngins'...Sending my prayers to Sherry and his children and grands....

It has been decades since Ron and I spent hours at the Goldfield Youth Center in what is now city hall. Ron was a great worker and always willing to do whatever was needed. I extend my sympathy to his family.

We are so sorry for your loss. He fought hard as long as he could. Our thoughts and prayers are with your whole family. Always show Avery pictures of her PaPa Ron & keep the memory going. He will always be watching over her. She has a great guardian angel now.
