Luella Jennie Frey
April 28, 2020
Luella Jennie Frey, 90, of Waukee, Iowa passed away peacefully with her daughters by her side, on April 28, 2020, due to an unexpected illness. A Celebration of Life will be held from 4 pm to 7 pm on Sunday, May 17, at Saylorville Event Center, in Des Moines, Iowa. The family will receive friends from 4 pm to 7 pm.
Born in 1930 and raised in Johnston, Iowa, the daughter of Walter and Hazel Elings, Luella was in the 1st graduating class of Johnston High School. She then attended nursing school while working for the Mercy Urbandale Medical Clinic, staying 38 years doing a little bit of everything. After her retirement in 2005, she continued to be active.
Luella loved bowling and taking trips with her bowling buddies. She continued to throw a 16 lb. bowling ball until she was 82-years old. She also loved to golf, work in her garden - which she did up until a year ago, and watch her grandchildren play sports. Above all, Luella loved spending time with her family and friends. Whether that be fishing, camping, or tubing down the river, there wasn’t much she wouldn’t do to spend time with those she loved.
Luella was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Hazel Elings; two brothers, Bud Elings and Albert Elings; and her oldest daughter, Judy Frey Willis. She is survived by her two daughters, Nancy (Craig) Franklin and Carolyn (Mark) Bradley; seven grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Special heartfelt thanks to our family, relatives, friends and neighbors for their support this past year. For their outstanding care, our thanks to the entire staff at Mercy Hospice in Johnston and Dr. Anderson at Mercy Urbandale Medical Clinic.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to MercyOne Hospice in Johnston, 5820 Winwood Dr., Johnston, Iowa 50131 or to the New England Aquarium, 1 Central Wharf, Boston, MA 02110 - where her granddaughter worked passionately to save the turtles. Condolences at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

My thoughts are with you all. I bowled with Lu and have such fond memories of her and her spunk. One determined lady and one of my favorite. Her and Norma and Diane are probably bowling followed up by a trip to the casino. RIP Lu!

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Luella. There is not a childhood memory that I have that she was not it. She came to all of our wedding and baby showers, birthdays and funerals. She was loved by the Hanes family very much. I am SURE she, Norma, and Diane are having a party now that they are together again in Heaven.
