Plagued with the loss of a dear friend. I write. I write and hope she can hear me; I write because I know she can hear me. I write because I know she would want me to.
Lauren Rice was the ultimate teacher. She would not hesitate to ask, who cares? As any one of Laurens students can remember.
So what? And Who cares?
We Do.
Lauren was an invested instructor. She taught like she has skin in the game because she did. She personally enjoyed each students success. With Lauren it was not about single victories, however. Yes, she graded each paper, but she would walk the creative journey with her students. Forcing them to get qualitative and quantitative with their writing, but more importantly with their ideas.
Lauren had magnetizing presence. She engaged with strangers, and aided friends. She gave advice and leant a listening ear.
Most of all Lauren travelled. There was never an adventure too challenging, too difficult. Never a sailboat she did not like, and never airplane that was not going where she was. Laurens motto should become the motto of all of us.
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness -Mark Twain

Lauren was an inspiration; she made a huge impact on my life and my self-confidence. I always felt safe in her classroom she taught me to challenge myself and that good isnt good enough. I read more books in one semester than I had in the previous 6 years combined! She was very empowering. She wasnt afraid to speak out and make you look from a different perspective. I think she was one of the few people out there making a real difference in the world one person at a time. Ive never seen a teacher go so hard and be that involved between all the papers to revise, classes to plan and the study abroad program I have no clue how she did it. She encouraged people to come out of their comfort zones and into a conversation that often lead to a new friendship. Although I did not have the pleasure of knowing her for long, Im very thankful I crossed paths with Lauren Rice. I feel like it was a pivot point in my life from where I went from trying to pass it to trying to do my best. My heart goes out to her friends and family.

Lauren was the first friend I made when my family moved to the Easter Lake area as a kid. I remember my childhood with her vividly. I am truly saddened to hear of her passing. Sending hugs and prayers to her family.

Lauren was such a great person and dog mom. Holiday's visits in our home were always an exciting part of our week and our young daughter loved cuddling with her and sneaking her snacks. Lauren and Holiday were truly beautiful souls and will be greatly missed.

We were saddened and shocked to hear of Lauren's death. Our prayers are with you during this ordeal. Lauren was such a vibrant woman who knew even at a young age who she was and what she wanted to accomplish. Our deepest sympathy.
