Sharon Kay (O’Tool) Goldin, 65, of Carlisle, passed away on Monday, March 9, 2009 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center from complications associated with breast cancer.
Ms. Goldin was born on June 29, 1943, to Lawrence and Dorothy O’Tool in Carroll, Iowa. She grew up in Scranton and graduated from Scranton High School. Ms. Goldin also received a medical technician’s degree from Gradwall School of Technology in St. Louis, Missouri. Following college, she spent her entire 45 year career with the Iowa Methodist Medical Center Laboratory.
Ms. Goldin enjoyed telling stories, baking, shopping, gardening, traveling, and visiting with her friends and family. Her most favorite times were spent with her grandchildren. She was compassionate, generous, smart, and the most amazing mother. She touched many people in her life. She held their hands and their hearts.
Ms. Goldin is survived by her daughter, Christine (William) Umphress of Carlisle; son, Michael (Elizabeth) Goldin of Chevy Chase, Maryland; five grandchildren, Kari Goldin, Seamus Goldin, Max Umphress, Madeline Umphress and Erin Umphress; sister, Marlene (Lorne) Hupp of Audubon; sister, Lois (John) Zimmerman of Carroll; brother, Larry (Sandra) O’Tool of Bettendorf; brother, Dean (Janet) O’Tool of Des Moines; extended family Thad (Jane) Nevitt, Kathryn (Kevin) Harrison-Goldin, Josh Goldin; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and many, many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dorothy and Lawrence O’Tool; sister, Jane Ann O’Tool; and brother Duane Edward O’Tool.
The family will greet friends and family from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, March 13 at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Carlisle, during which a Rosary service will take place at 7:00 p.m. The funeral Mass will be held Saturday at 10:00 a.m. again at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church with lunch following. Interment services will follow at Scranton Cemetery on Saturday afternoon. Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home is assisting the family, (515) 285-3911.
