Patricia "Pat" Paulsen
May 05, 2019
Patricia “Pat” Paulsen, 70, of Waukee passed peacefully early Sunday morning, May 5, 2019, with her family by her side.
Pat was born to George and Ann Nelson on January 13, 1949 in Long Island, NY, and grew up in Des Moines, Iowa. She attended The University of Iowa where she received her BA in 1971.
While at the University of Iowa, she met and married the love of her life, Grant, beginning their loving marriage of 48 years. Early in marriage they lived in Sacramento, California and Iowa City, ultimately settling in West Des Moines to raise their family.
Pat was dedicated to everything she did in life, from teaching in high school, to serving as a tax preparer for over 30 years, and participating in the community. In her free time she enjoyed Hawkeye football games, playing bridge with friends, traveling, and spending time with family at the lake house.
Pat never let the challenges in life get in the way of what was important to her. She was passionate about friends, family and family traditions, especially during the holidays, when she served homemade Polish dishes. The holidays were her favorite times of year. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, her greatest source of pride and joy.
Pat is survived by her husband, Grant; and her children, Mark (Jennifer) Paulsen, Scott (Mimi) Paulsen and Kristen (Jay) Johnson all of Urbandale, Iowa. She is survived by five grandchildren, Joseph, Nicholas, and Andrew Paulsen and Aubrey and Matthew Johnson. She is also survived by her sister, Kathie Nelson of Dallas, Texas.
Visitation will be held at Hamilton's on Westown Parkway in West Des Moines on Thursday, May 9 from 5 to 7 pm with a Rosary to begin at 4:30. The funeral Mass will be at St. Boniface Church in Waukee on Friday, May 10 at 10 am followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery.

While only having the chance to get to know Pat these past few years at the office, she genuinely was one of the kindest, most gentle souls i have ever had the privilege of working with. Her smile lit up everyone around her and it was a joy to visit the office on days when she was working.
I am deeply saddened by her passing and my prayers go out to the entire family and everyone who was lucky enough to have known Pat.
John 14:1-3 Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Fathers house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.

Dear Grant and family, My deepest sympathy to Your family as you grieve Pat. Her grace no matter the circumstance and universal kindness are lasting memories for me .
I remember how while postpartum at UIH she became translator for her roommate. Just a small example of her kindness.
Keeping you in my thoughts.

I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to the Paulsen family. I had the privilege of knowing Pat for more than 25 years, and she had always been a kind, gracious and classy lady. Her love and devotion to her family was immense. I remember seeing her at any event she could possibly get to, baseball game, basketball game, school function, and it wasn't as easy for her as it was for most grandparents. She was the kind of person we all aspire to be. God bless your family and please know she will always be watching over you! Colleen Pagano Grant

Dear Grant and family,
I have many childhood memories of spending weekends at my cousins Patty, and Kathys home in Saylorville. We would help Aunt Ann cook, make dolls out of Hollyhocks, go for walks, and pull weeds in Uncle Georges garden.
I felt honored to have been in your wedding to Patty, 48 years ago. It was the first time I had a formal dress to wear. Both of you made me feel very special.
Over the years as we became busy with raising children, and juggling all the activities that entailed, Patty was always willing to help
when needed. As a young mom, with a new baby, and needing to go back to work, she even babysat my daughter so I would not worry about her while I was working.
Patty was very generous over the years in helping family members with birthdays, baptisms, holidays, and special school events. She was a fabulous cook, and great gift shopper.
I know she was very active in volunteering for hospital events, as well as needs in the community. She was generous with her time, and worked hard at her Tax Preparation career, despite challenges with her health. I admired her persistence in remaining active despite her health challenges, and always being there to include our Aunt Marian in holidays, and her family events. My mom always enjoyed spending holidays with Patty, and your family, as the years passed. My mom would often recall that Patty was her girl several weekends before my older brother was born. She even told my mom to take him back, that she was Aunt Ruths best girl. I will miss her sparkling blue eyes, and smile. With deepest sympathy to you, your children, and grandchildren,

Grant,
Pat was so special. Her eyes always sparkled no matter how much pain she had. I remember how hard she worked for the Medical Auxiliary and other volunteer organizations, but also how much she loved to play bridge with her friends. I will miss her dearly. Find strength in God during this difficult time.
