Elaine Carlson

Elaine M. Carlson, 87, passed away Thursday, December 11, 2008 at Manor Care in West Des Moines. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at Grace Lutheran Church, 3010 52nd St. in Des Moines, of which she was a member. Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Madrid, IA at a later date.
Elaine was born January 20, 1921 in Madrid, IA to Carl and Etta Lundahl. She graduated from Augustana College in Rock Island, IL and was a music teacher and secretary to the President at Grandview College. She also taught piano for the Des Moines Public Schools. Elaine was an active member of the AFS Scandinavian Club and a volunteer at Iowa Lutheran Hospital Auxiliary and Luther Park. Her hobbies included rosemaling, piano and gardening Elaine enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Elaine is survived by her daughter, Ann (David) Gustafson of Norwalk; sons, Philip Carlson of Des Moines and Paul (Lisa) Beytien-Carlson of St. Paul, MN; seven grandchildren, Matthew Gustafson, Michael Gustafson, Erik Gustafson, Emily Gustafson, Abby Beytien-Carlson, Libby Beytien-Carlson and Ethan Carlson; and two great-grandchildren, Garret and Jacob Gustafson. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Beth Ann Carlson; husband, Pastor J. Grant Carlson; and her sister, Audrey Swanson.
