Richard Powell
January 06, 2019
Richard E. Powell, 65, was called home to be with his Father in Heaven on Sunday, January 6, 2019. He was born March 9, 1953 in Des Moines, Iowa to Richard and Beatrice Powell. Richard served in the U. S. Air Force from 1971 to 1974. He was a member of Bloomfield United Methodist Church his entire life. He married Sheila Briggs Hanssen on October 9, 1977 in Des Moines. Richard was a supervisor at Ryko Manufacturing and also had worked at AMF.
Richard was a patient and fair man, traits he inherited from his father. He was gentle and kind and had an intolerance for injustice or gossip. He never said a negative word against anyone and he disliked cursing. Richard was only ever positive in his dealings with his fellow man.
He enjoyed watching westerns on TV, and John Wayne was one of his favorite stars. He enjoyed cooking for Sheila, gardening, fishing, and riding his Harleys. Richard loved his nieces and nephews and his entire family. He had a fondness for children and animals and loved his fur kids unconditionally. He was a wonderful husband and loved taking care of his wife.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Sheila; mother, Bea; siblings, Mary (Doran) Schrader and Randy (Janeice) Powell; many nieces, nephews, and other extended family. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard; mother-in-law, Vera Holman; and his best friend, Dallas Tew.
There will be a celebration of life from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines.
Contributions may be directed to the family in loving memory of Richard.
