Service Details

Donald M. Morey, 82, closed his blue eyes for one last time before passing away peacefully at home with his wife of 60 years at his side on October 2, 2008. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be Monday 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Don was born in Des Moines on February 14, 1926 to Harry and Marie (Jenkins) Morey. He graduated from East High School in January 1944 then enlisted in the Army where he served during WW II. Don met Madeline (Wheatly) 2 weeks after leaving the Army. They married on June 6, 1948. He attended Cummings Art School in Des Moines and Omaha Commercial Art. Don worked as a technical illustrator for over 30 years in Ames, the Quad Cities and Dover, New Jersey. Most of his work was for the Army Research and Development Department at the Rock Island Arsenal from 1960-1977, where the tanks and helicopters he designed were later used in Desert Storm. Don received many awards and recognitions for his art work.
When Don retired from Government service in 1980, he and Madeline moved back “home” to Des Moines from New Jersey. Don took many photos and kept numerous photo albums and a map of his travels and family vacations to Minnesota, Okoboji, California and Hawaii.
Don was active in founding the Christ E.U.B. Church in East Moline, IL., and the Youth Ministries at Asbury United Methodist Church in Bettendorf, IA. He is a member of Staves UMC in Des Moines.
Don enjoyed photography, woodworking, and taking care of his large yard until Alzheimer’s no longer allowed him.
Don is survived by his wife Madeline L.; one daughter, Mary Kay Ferris of Brookfield, MO; two sons, Allen D. of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Paul M (Linda) of Annapolis, MD; 3 grandsons Joseph, Anthony both of Puyallup, WA, Jordan Ferris of Brookfield, MO and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Robert G.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Staves United Methodist Church or Iowa Health Hospice.
