Mike McCafferey, 44, passed away at his home Tuesday, September 16, 2008. Michael was born on September 30, 1963. He was raised in Fort Dodge, Iowa by his parents Carolyn (Hayes) and Robert McCaffery. He graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High School and then joined the United States Navy. He was stationed in Great Lakes, Illinois and studied Power Plant Operation and Maintenance. He received an honorable discharge in 1986 and worked briefly for Mercy Hospital before starting his own HVAC Company in 1998. He was most recently with Mid American Energy as a Hi Voltage Scheduled Switching Operator. Mike was very proud of his contributions in the propulsion steam and generating plant start-up for the Battleship Iowa BB61. He was among one of the first group of sailors to take the ship on a world tour, and is a ship plank holder.
Mike had a wonderful sense of humor and loved teasing people. He was very competitive and enjoyed playing Scrabble and Pictionary with his family. He loved the time spent with his family and especially when the whole family was together for a gathering. He also enjoyed hours and hours of fishing with his brothers. They even caught a squirrel once with bread and a fishing pole.
Survivors to honor Mike’s memory are, his beloved mother Carolyn Hayes of Fort Dodge, IA; father, Robert McCaffery; brothers, Douglas (Linda) McCaffery of Texas, Jeffrey (Jane) McCaffery of Colorado; aunts and uncles, Jeanette and Dale Niemier of Fort Dodge, IA, Marilyn and Bill Sindlinger of West Des Mines, IA, Lila and Doug Palmer of Harcourt, IA and Dick and Phyllis Tappe of Montana; nephew, Josh McCaffery, of Ankeny, IA; nieces, Emily McCaffery of Ankeny, IA, Samantha McCaffery and Sarah White of Texas.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 19, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines, IA.
