Joseph Robert Stock, 75, passed away on Saturday, August 4, 2018 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa.

Joe was born in Spencer, Iowa on January 23, 1943 to Joseph Walter Stock and Ida Irene Auestad Stock. He graduated from Alton High School in Alton, Illinois, lettering in varsity basketball for three years. He attended and played basketball on a partial athletic scholarship for Grand View College. Joe continued his studies attending Mankato State and Drake University. Serving his country for six years, Joe was an Army reservist. He was a salesperson and retired from Future Foam, Inc. in 2016. In addition to spending time with his family, especially on Lake Okoboji, Joe’s biggest passion was coaching youth soccer and basketball. He was an avid athlete his entire life. He was a decades-long member of the YMCA, playing basketball on many Friday late afternoons. Joe and his brothers once swept the Des Moines Men’s Summer City Basketball League in an undefeated season!

Joe married Suzanne Patricia Mattern in 1967 and together they had two children: Lisa Suzanne Stock Prey Watters of Waukee and Joseph John Stock of Des Moines. Joe’s happiest days were when his children were young: he loved being a father. His heart swelled with pride when he spoke of his grandsons, Jake, Zach, and Sam Prey, and Luie Watters who will miss terribly their loving, generous, and supportive “Poppy”. Joe was especially grateful for his son-in-law, Mike Watters - “A good man who has stepped up for our family in so many ways!” Mike’s children, Kayla, Michael, and Lucy, were also close to Joe’s heart. He is also survived by his younger brother, Mick Stock of West Des Moines; many loving family members, dear friends, teammates, and players. Joe was preceded in death by his wife, his parents; his youngest brother, Jerold Lee Stock; and niece, Miranda Jean Stock.

A private memorial service to celebrate Joe’s life will be held at a later date. The family expresses their gratitude for the love and kindness shown by many during his illness and following his passing. To honor Joe, please yell a cheer for any athlete competing for the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Dowling Maroons, the Waukee Warriors, or for Special Olympics!
