Dale Witmer

Dale John Witmer, 92, passed away on March 28, 2018 in Des Moines. He was born April 12, 1925 in Des Moines to Fredrick and Ruth (Johnson) Witmer. Dale married Arleen Shea in 1948.
Dale served in the US Navy during WWII and was aboard the USS Enterprise in the Pacific Theater. He retired after over 30 years with the Des Moines Fire Department as a Captain. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, being outdoors and tending to his yard.
He is survived by his children, Jack (Jody) Witmer and Terry (Demarko) Nereim; grandchildren, Brian (Kelly) Witmer, Shona (Shawn) Voigt, Aaron (Megan) Moreland and Christa (Stephen) Pritchett; step-grandchildren, Clint (Katie) Nereim and Orrie Nereim; several great-grandchildren; and sister, Patricia Sullivan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Arleen; and 2 brothers, Frederick and Maurice.
Private interment will take place at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines. A graveside memorial will be scheduled at a later date.
The family would like to express sincere thanks and gratitude to the Physicians and staff at the Des Moines Veterans Hospital that have been a part of Dale’s care over the past years. Most recently to his Home Based Primary Care Team and the caregivers at the VA Hospice for their excellent care and compassion.

I AM WITH AMERICAN LEGION POST 274. DALE WAS A MEMBER OF OUR POST AND I MET HIM A FEW YEARS AGO. IT WAS MY UNDERSTANDING FROM OUR TALK HE WOULD LIKE US TO DO AN HONOR GUARD FOR HIM AT HIS BURIAL.
