Patrick Alshouse
March 18, 2018
Patrick Alshouse, 75, of Clive died suddenly on Sunday, March 18, 2018 after pneumonia overwhelmed his heart. He was born November 14, 1942, son of Mary Jane and William E. Alshouse. Pat is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mirium Alshouse; his son, Derek Alshouse both of Clive; daughter, Aubrey Alshouse of Louisville, KY; his sister, Marsha (Ray) Scott; nieces and nephews, J. (Katey) Hartzell, Amanda Hartzell (Mike) Tyler, and Bill (Gretchen) Scott of West Des Moines; and his eight great-nieces and nephews.
Pat began his teaching career at Washington Irving Junior High in Des Moines but shortly moved to West Des Moines where he taught language arts at Stillwell Junior High and literature courses at Valley High School where he retired after 25 years of service. Pat grew up in Iowa Falls, Burlington, Ames and Clear Lake participating in senior tennis, swimming teams, and graduating from Mason City Junior College. He became a serious student while completing his degrees at Drake University and thereafter never lost his curiosity or passion for learning.
He took pride in the scholarship of his students and family, enjoyed following the Hawkeyes (in particular), but the Cyclones, and Bulldogs when Iowa didn’t have a game. His hobbies included photography of wildlife and family (while being camera shy himself), personal work-outs in his home gym leading to some medals at the Iowa Games, and anything that interested his children or family. He was devoted to his family, and cherished, friends, neighbors, and colleagues. He was a friend to any animal or bird and was never without at least one dog at his feet.
A memorial celebration service will be held at Westkirk Presbyterian Church, 2700 Colby Woods Dr. in Urbandale, IA on Thursday, March 22 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one hour prior. Burial will be at Jordan Cemetery in West Des Moines.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family. Condolences may be expressed at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

I had Mr. Alshouse for Literature at Valley High School in the 1980's (I'm sorry - even after all these years, I still can't call a teacher by his first name...!).
He was so patient, so very kind - a wonderful teacher. So sorry to hear of his passing.

Pat and I grew up in Iowa Falls only three blocks apart. His house was at the top of "hospital hill" which was the go-to place for sledding in the winter. We lost touch when we were in sixth grade and we moved from town.
In the early 1960s we touched base again in Junior College and I was in awe of his physical condition and bodybuilding work. My memories of Pat's friendship are the best---and I'd like to thank his family for sharing him with me in one way or another over the years. So proud of his accomplishments and so sorry for his family's loss.

I had him for a couple English classes (still remember reading The Great Gatsby and When Legends Die in one of his classes). I enjoyed having him as a teacher and his quick wit. Condolences to his family, friends and many former students.

Mr. Alshouse was a great teacher. I had his Early American Lit class at Valley High School in the 1980s. He was such a great teacher, calm demeanor and great sense of humor. I'm so sorry to hear about his passing. My condolences to Miriam and the family.

Dear Mirium, Aubrey and Derek,
As I age I continue to believe what I taught in the classroom from an old African folktale. The essence was that a person really never dies as long as we remember them. From experience I can tell you that Pat will stay alive in your hearts and will never die. Both Aubrey and Derek may remember this from my class (7th grade social studies at Indian Hills Jr. High).
Although we drifted apart during our careers, Pat was a friend who helped me settle into my life's work. I am saddened by your (our) loss, but realize that death is really for the living, as we remember Pat and what he meant to us.
Unfortunately, I will not be at the visitation or service, as I will be out of town. However, I will keep you in my heart during this most difficult of times, and hope to see you in the future.
Blessings,
Ron Reighard

Pat and I were officemates 32 years ago when I first started in West Des Moines. He didn't want an office mate but by the end of the first week, we were fast friends. He might be the smartest man I ever met and he had such a wicked wit. Once we started laughing, we couldn't stop. If Brindley was there, that was especially true. I am so grateful to him for helping the newbie get acquainted with West Des Moines
