Surrounded by loved ones, Ed peacefully departed this life at 10pm Monday evening at the VA hospital in Knoxville. He was born in Melrose February 11, 1940 and graduated from Melrose High School in 1958. He moved to Des Moines where he resided for 50 years. Ed served two years in the Army and upon returning home joined Carpenter’s Local #106 and worked for Younkers Department Store as a finish carpenter, Weitz construction and other local construction companies. After retiring he volunteered many hours at the VA in Des Moines and also delivered for Meals on Wheels.
Waiting in Heaven for him were his parents Gerald and Winifred Lawless; sisters Delores Scott, Mary Davis, Helen Boutross and nephew Tony Gasparovich. He will be greatly missed by brothers Jerry, Bill and Bernard and sister Bernie as well as many nephews, nieces and friends.
A mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 A.M. Friday, May 30th at Christ the King Catholic Church with burial following at Avon Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 4-7 P.M. Thursday with a rosary service at 7:00 P.M. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent DePaul Society, St. Joseph’s Shelter or the charity of choice.
Ed’s family wishes to thank the staff at the Des Moines and Knoxville VA Hospitals and especially the VA Hospice in Knoxville for their care and compassion to Ed and his family.

We lived next door to Ed for a number of years and did not know of his volunteer work or that he was in the Army. Most of the years that we lived next to Ed, he was a quiet, but polite man. He will be greatly missed and loved by all..
