Bernard Bailey, 79, of Des Moines, Iowa, died Sunday, May, 18, 2008, at the Taylor House Hospice after a 5 year struggle with cancer. Funeral services are set for 10:30 am Thursday, May 22, at the Staves United Methodist Church, of which he was a member. Burial will take place at the Franklin Township Cemetery in Santiago, Iowa. Reverend R.D Streeter and Reverend Rudy Trushiem will be officiating. Family will receive friends Wednesday, May 20, at the Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street, from 6 to 8 pm. Bernard was born at home in Polk County. He farmed most of his life and was then a bridge crew foreman for the Iowa DOT for 24 years. He was a true outdoorsman and enjoyed the day trips with his beloved wife of 52 years, Maxine and his family. Bernard is preceded in death by his wife Maxine, his parents; Enoch and Ruby Bailey, brothers; Richard, Orval, and sister, Rosemary. He is survived by 3 sons; Patrick, of Texas, Stephen, of Ankeny, Thomas, of Urbandale, and a daughter, Lorena Thullen, of Cedar Rapids. He also leaves behind brothers, Elvin, of Des Moines, Dan of Colfax, Dean, of Kansas City, Mo. Sisters; Wanda Hainline of Mingo, Leanna Thornton, of Mitchellville, and Sherry Carmichael, of Des Moines. 20 Grandchildren and 20 Great-grandchildren will also celebrate his memory. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Iowa Taylor House Hospice in honor of Bernard.
