Verla Mae Garton, daughter of Charley and Mary Dickey Roe was born October 8, 1918 in Humeston, Iowa, Wayne County. She passed away May 10, 2008 in Des Moines, Iowa. The family will greet friends from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th St, Des Moines, with the funeral service beginning at 12:00 p.m. Burial will take place at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, at Humeston Cemetery.
Verla graduated from Humeston High School in 1936 after attending Cambria Consolidated School for ten years.
She was united in marriage to James Richard Garton May 14, 1939. To this union a son Jimmie Lee and daughter Sandra Kay were born. They spent time in Baltimore, Maryland, Council Bluffs, Garden Grove, and Humeston, Iowa. After Jim’s death in 1965, she moved to Des Moines in 1967 where she was employed at Meredith Printing as a quality technician and retired in 1980.
Preceding her in death were her husband, James; son, Jimmie and grandson, Richard Preston Garton; her parents, Charley and Mary Roe; four brothers, Arthur, Earnest, Charles, Louis and two sisters, Vera and Mary Louise. Surviving are her daughter Sandra of Des Moines, her grand-children John (Rachel) Adams, Jimmy Garton, and Jamee (Bill) Poortinga, two great-granddaughters; Shae MaeAnn Poortinga and Katherine Grace Adams all of Des Moines, sister-in-law Coy Garton of Baxter, Iowa. Also surviving are her two step-granddaughters Kimberly Martin and Karol (Bruce) Hammer, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In 1935 Verla joined the First Baptist Church in Humeston, and in 1971 she transferred her membership to the Wakonda Christian Church. She was a longtime member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Humeston and Meredith Retirees in Des Moines.
After retiring, she enjoyed traveling and did volunteer work for United Way, Meredith Retirees, and her church.
The family would like to thank Dr. R.E. Alley Jr. for his dedication and management of Verla's care.
