Yvonne Dewein
February 13, 2018
Yvonne Gayle (Vickroy) Dewein, with her daughter, son and husband at her side, peacefully left this physical world on Monday, February 12, following a 3 1/2 year battle against esophageal cancer. Yvonne was born November 1, 1953, at Fort Bliss Army Hospital, El Paso, TX, to Edward William (Bud) Vickroy and Zola Luree (Jones) Vickroy.
Following her father’s discharge from the Army, her family moved to Jamaica, IA, for a year before returning to her parents’ hometown of Danville, IA, where she attended and graduated from Danville Community School as salutatorian of her class in 1972. Education was important to her and family as she received her AA Degree from Southeastern Community College and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1976 with a Degree in Elementary Education and Special Education. She also received her Masters in Education through “Mustang University” and Vitterbo University. Yvonne was an educator in Iowa Public Schools for 39 years, having taught various levels of elementary and Special Education in Preston Community School, Iowa Falls Community School, Eagle Grove Community School and Dallas Center-Grimes Community School. She was a dedicated and caring teacher to her students, going above and beyond the call of duty to make learning easier and better for her students.
Yvonne had many hobbies and enjoyments in her life. She along with her husband, Rich, loved gardening, music, cooking, dining out, traveling and their children, among many things. Yvonne and Rich were married on June 22, 1974, at the Danville United Methodist Church and the parents of two children, Sarah and Andrew. The two of them worked in tandem on many projects and ideas. Yvonne was the main costume designer for many of the musicals presented in the schools where her husband was the vocal director. It was a passion for her to find the right material and design that was unique for each show. They loved to “day trip” to a wide variety of nurseries and greenhouses looking for the special variety and “different” plants for their garden and then finding the right spot for it in their various flower beds. They enjoyed finding that special restaurant for a fine dining experience. Both loved to travel and explore the various parts of the country.
Yvonne is survived by her husband of 43 years, Rich; a daughter, Sarah Reihmann (Clive) and husband Tyler; a son, Andrew Dewein (Waukee) and wife Tiffany Vasquez-Dewein; her three beautiful granddaughters, Abigayle, Bryna, and Penelope; her brother David Vickroy (El Dorado Hills, CA) and wife Marcia; a sister, Kathleen Vickroy (Enola, PA) and husband Tom Dardick; sister-in-law, Cathy Vickroy (Norwalk); her mother, Luree Jones Vickroy Wagner (Clive); nephews and nieces, Lindsay Scheidler (West Des Moines) and husband Chris, Skyler Vickroy and fiancee Yuko Nishimura (San Jose, CA), Jon-David Stewart (Fremont, CA) and Collyn and Geneva Dardick (Enola, PA). She was preceded in death by her father Edward William Vickroy; her brother Michael William Vickroy; mother-in-law Wilma Katherine Dewein; father-in-law Frank Nansen Dewein; and step-father Arlo Wagner.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Central Presbyterian Church, 3829 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, on February 24, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. The family requests no flowers and that attendees wear red, her favorite color, to celebrate.

We wish to express our deepest sympathies to the family and especially to Luree who has been a friend for many many years, even going back to early childhood when she and Don grew up a half block apart in Danville.
