Carroll Ellis Koons, 97, of Ankeny, died March 1, 2008 at Sunny View Care Center. Carroll was born December 6, 1910, to Claude Koons and Maude Wagner near Batavia, Iowa. His father died when he was 6 years old and his mother married William P. Bartholow in April of 1920; giving him brothers, Olen and Merril Bartholow.
Carroll graduated from Libertyville High School in 1929 and graduated from McPherson College in McPherson, Kansas. He taught school for several years. In 1942, Carroll was inducted into the U.S. Army and served in the U.S. Army Signal Corp. Much of his duty was in Ethiopia, until his honorable discharge in 1945. He worked at the Veteran’s Administration Office in Des Moines until his retirement.
Living at the YMCA, he found that Stover Memorial Church of the Brethren, a new church at the time, held Sunday services at the Y. Attending church at Stover, Carroll met Vera Fern Funk. Carroll and Vera were married August 13, 1950, and continued attending Stover where he was an organist for many years. They lived on Richmond Street in Des Moines, until moving to their home on Hubbell Boulevard in 1968. In August 2006, they moved to Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny, Iowa. Carroll enjoyed playing the piano and giving piano concerts at Sunny View Care Center.
Survivors include his wife, Vera; sister-in-law, Bettye Bartholow; niece, Mary Kay (Roy) Bonnett, and his devoted care-giver, Gene Wallace. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Olen and Merril.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, March 6, 2008, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave. Des Moines. Visitation will be one hour prior to services.
