Gary Grant
September 17, 2017
Gary Samuel Grant, 76, passed away at home with family at his side on Sunday, September 17, 2017, after a long illness.
Gary was born on December 30, 1940, to Harry and Dorothy (Tuttle) Grant and is survived by his children Matt (Tiffany) Grant of King George, VA; Madeline (Brian) Crandell of Madrid; Rachel (Justin) Wonders of Altoona; and Rebecca (Joe) Grant of Des Moines; nine grandchildren, Elauria, Blayke, Kaine, Ryker Grant; Cody and Chase Crandell; and Austin, Marissa, Trevor Wonders; a sister Marilynn (Jerry) Wadden; and niece Leigh Wadden. He was preceded in death by his parents, a nephew Bill Wadden, and niece Julie Wadden.
He was a graduate of North High School and a Des Moines Flight School. He had worked at several jobs throughout his life, but his true passions were creating drawings and paintings and being a part-time private pilot and flight instructor, a license he renewed for many years after he had retired. He liked to keep his mind sharp, so, even while he was deathly ill, he was interested in engaging visitors in games on his iPhone, and he continued to create drawings for family until a few days before his death.
Gary was fortunate to have so many loving family members. He was mostly housebound for more than a year, but his daughters faithfully made schedules so that one of them fixed dinner and stayed several hours with him every night. In addition, toward the end of his life, family cared for him before work, on lunch breaks, and between jobs. He was indeed a lucky man to have such loving care for so long.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 20, 2017, at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Any memorial contributions may be made in loving memory of Gary to the Wounded Warrior Project.

I just learned today of Gary's death and my heart goes out to his children and grandchildren and all who loved him. I'm so happy to know he had a wonderful, supportive family.
I dished up ice cream at Reed's on Euclid, and he hung with the group of boys who played cards and cribbage in the back booths until Mrs. Smith shooed them out and up to the BeanBowl. Such a rascal he was when we were teenagers! Always the twinkle in his eyes as he related the latest mischief he and Mike Mitchell were up to; who knew whether to believe those stories? Gary was an original. He was not one of those nice, polite boys whose names I've forgotten. Gary probed, he hounded, he badgered, he had to know, he had to see beneath the surface. He asked imaginative, provocative questions. He made me think. I liked him. He and my sister, Cathy, were steadies back then. She remembers him as sometimes charming, and sometimes complicated and unpredictable, and she remembers especially how she adored his wonderful parents!

I was saddened to hear of Gary's death but am glad he is now at peace! I grew up the first 9 years of my life living next door to the Grant family, and although I was friends with his sister Marilynn, he was a big part of my neighborhood life. So many fun memories. i am sure he is giving art and flying instructions in Heaven now!! Madonna

I have many fond memories of my Uncle Gary when I was growing up. I'll always remember the amazing birthday cards that he created. We all loved his artistic talent and his willingness to share it with us. He also loved to fly and shared this passion with others. I'll never forget how he became a joyous child when he took us flying, while also being a very competent and accomplished pilot. I'm sorry he had to be so sick for so long and am glad he's at peace now. Leigh

I'm sorry to hear about Gary's passing. I was a friend of Gary's when we worked together at Strauss lock co. I was always impressed with his knowledge of so many things, and the great shape he was in! He took me and my friends flying once, and remember letting me fly the plane! What a thrill! One thing I remember about Gary is he would eat bayer aspirin out of those little tin holders like candy. He said it was from when he used to be a boxer. I don't remember if we gave him the nickname rabbit or if he had it already, but he liked it I remember! I will miss him, he was a great friend to have!!! Rob swisher
