Cheryl Shippy

Cheryl Fern Shippy, age 72, of Des Moines passed away on Wednesday, August 30, 2017. Cheryl was born on May 25, 1945 in Minneapolis, MN. to the late Myrna and Orlo Barber.

Cheryl attended Vocational High School in Minneapolis, MN. She married Donald Shippy on July 29, 1972 in Yuma, AZ. Cheryl and Donald resided in Yuma, AZ. and San Diego, CA. before making the move to Des Moines, IA. where she spent the rest of her days.

Family and friends were Cheryl’s pride and enjoyment. She enjoyed the family get-togethers and found never-ending happiness spending time with all her siblings, in-laws, nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews. Cheryl loved her “girls night out” with her co-workers and traveling to visit with relatives and friends. Everyone who knew Cheryl, knew she was an avid cat lover and some even thought of her as “the crazy cat lady”.

Cheryl is survived by her brother, Burton Barber and sister, Kay Utley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; sisters, Marvis, Mavis, Karen and Patricia and her brother, William. She is also survived by so many fantastic and amazing nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank all of those who took the time to get to know Cheryl and provided a positive impact on her life in so many special ways.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street in Des Moines. Family will start greeting visitors at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. She will be laid to rest following the service at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines.
