Sherrill Kay Kounkel

Sherrill Kay Kounkel passed away on August 23, 2017. Services will be held at Valley Church, 4343 Fuller Road in West Des Moines, IA with visitation on Thursday, August 31 from 4 to 7 p.m. and the memorial service on Friday, September 1 at 10:30 a.m.

Sherrill was born on February 1, 1939 in Fort Dodge, IA to Loretta and Robert Miller, Sr. She attended school in Fort Dodge and graduated from Fort Dodge High School in 1957. Sherrill worked as a seamstress for Hawkeye Glove and later married Dean Kounkel on June 4, 1966. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, and most of all – her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Dean; her son, Neal (Jill) Kounkel of Lee’s Summit, MO; daughters, Dr. Valerie (Angie) Kounkel of Johnston and Jody (Dan) Swensen of Clive; grandchildren, Colby, Cody and Colten Swensen, Jeff and John Kounkel; her brother, Robert Miller, Jr. of Davenport; and her sister, Carol Sturges of Johnston; and other loving family members. Sherrill was preceded in death by her parents; and nephew, Mac Fleckenstein.
