Kay Lois Schmidt, 80, passed away peacefully early Friday morning on July 21, 2017 at Methodist Hospital with her husband and son by her side. She was born on March 13, 1937 in Middletown, New York.
In the late 60’s and early 70’s Kay loved bowling, she became a professional bowler, and traveled to multiple nationwide tournaments. Kay began work at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago as a check processor and she was an employee at the Hoover Building for the State of Iowa, as a mircrofiche processor.
On January 10th, 1976, she married Orlen Schmidt. Shortly after their marriage she began to show a passion for trucking and obtained her chauffeur license. The two of them loved being on the road traveling to 45 states as a trucking team for OE Schmidt Inc. They were very well known by their CB Handles as Night Rider and Powder Puff!
She is survived by her loving husband, Orlen Schmidt; sons, Matthew Tibbitts (Missie) and Brian Henckel (Linda); grandchildren, Mitchell, Thomas, Nate, Mollie, and Madelyn; and 6 great-grandchildren.
Kay is preceded in death by her father, Edward; step-father, Bill; mother, Beatrix; sister, Sherri; and close cousin, Blanche.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral service will begin at 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 26th, at Hamilton’s followed by burial at 2 p.m., at Oak Hill Cemetery in Williamsburg, Iowa.
