Robert W. "Bob" Cornwell
July 07, 2017
On July 7, 2017, Bob Cornwell passed peacefully from a well-lived and well-loved life. He fought leukemia courageously for a year and a half, continuing to care more for others than himself. His final days were spent with friends and family by his side, just how he lived every other day of his life.
Born in Corydon, Iowa to Velma and Merle Cornwell on June 26, 1946, Bob was the youngest of six children. After high school, he moved to Des Moines to work for his family’s business. He was then called to serve our country with the US Army in Vietnam. Upon his return, he owned a gas station. It was here where he first laid eyes on his future wife, Sally. They were married on August 16, 1969.
He proudly wore the badge of the Des Moines Police Department for 38 years. Patrolling the South and West sides of Des Moines, he knew those who worked and lived there, developing lasting friendships. After retiring, he worked for the Iowa State Capitol security for almost ten years. He was able to talk with every person entering and leaving the Capitol, as Bob never met a stranger.
He is now able to continue conversations with those who have preceded him in death: his parents and brothers, Rube, Gene, Jack and Gerald. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Sally; sons, Chad (Lindsey) and Darren; adoring grandchildren, Tess, Mason, Carson and Cooper; sister, Marlene Miller; and a host of extended family and friends.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn on Northpark Drive in Johnston on July 16th from 1:00-3:00 pm. Casual dress is appropriate. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or Kavanagh House on 56th.

Sally, Chad, Lindsey and Darren My condolences to all of you I met Bob when He was 4 yrs old, so I go back a few years. He was a little bashful and giggled all the time. I felt Bob and his siblings were all blessed with the gift to gab. They never met a stranger. They definitely had the Cornwell gene of being stubborn, It has almost been 9 yrs since Bob, his 4 brothers and David have been together, I am sure he has been welcomed with open arms and probably a cold one, He will be missed but always remembered R.I.P Bob
