Dr. William deGravelles
January 15, 2008
The staff, physicians and volunteers of
Iowa Health – Des Moines and Iowa Methodist Medical Center
join together to celebrate the life
of our physician and lifetime friend,
Dr. William deGravelles.
Dr. deGravelles helped Iowa Methodist
fulfill its longstanding dream of providing a world-class
rehabilitation program for people with disabilities.
He had a relentless focus to improve the world
for people with physical impairments.
It was through his zeal that Younker Rehabilitation Center
at Iowa Methodist became a reality.
With Dr. deGravelles providing leadership as medical director, Younker Rehabilitation accepted its first patient
on February 12, 1959,
and has continued to assist patients
in disability management for nearly forty-nine years.
After almost forty years of serving Younker and Iowa Methodist,
Dr. deGravelles retired from practice,
but he never retired from the hearts of those he touched –
his patients, and the staff who worked alongside him.
While we will miss him, we are grateful to have this moment
to remember the caring and quality healthcare
Dr. deGravelles provided to the people of central Iowa
through his lifelong career.

I was saddened to read of Dr. de's recent death in the Des Moines Register yesterday and send my heartfelt sympathy to you. I was a rehab staff P.T. at Younker's 1973-76 and have very fond memories of Dr. de - his great leadership and skill as a Dr., strong will and example of coping with a disability, his humor, his love and support of staff, his very special Christmas parties... to know him was to love and admire him! What a legacy he left!
My love and sympathy to you,
Carol Ann Morris

To the family of Dr. deGravelles--I just wanted to express my sympathy to you at this very sad time. I was a new Methodist graduate nurse on Younker 4 in 1970 when I first met Dr. deGravelles. I certainly was inexperienced and "green" but he always showed the utmost respect and concern to me and his patients. I walked into many rooms with him where there were young people who were there as the result of an accident and feeling very sorry for themselves and when they saw Dr."d" on his crutches and what he was able to do they sat up and took notice. They used his car to learn to drive, he provided much emotional support as well as showed them personally how to do certain things that they thought they would never do again. I worked the evening shift and he was often there late into the night. I feel very privileged to have known him. He was very much an inspiration to us all. The world will not be the same without him , but he has left his mark. Sincerely Pat Williams
