Charles W. "Walt" Whitlatch
May 15, 2017
On December 9, 1947, Charles Walton “Walt” Whitlatch, Jr. was born to Charles and Betty Whitlatch. On May 15, 2017, at Taylor Hospice House, at the age of 69, Walt, beloved husband, devoted father and grandfather entered into his eternal heavenly home; meeting his Savior, Jesus Christ, face to face.
Walt was a good man in every possible way and lived his life to the fullest. He loved his cars – let’s repeat this statement, he loved his cars. At one time, he owned a ’57 Chevy which he had restored and eventually it was sold and transported to Australia. He owned a yellow Corvette and took great pleasure in taking each grandchild for long rides. He enjoyed word search puzzles, the flowers in the yard and watching the Fox News Network.
Walt was a proud Southsider, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1966. He loved his career as a member of the Des Moines Fire Department, retiring in 2004 as a District Chief. His fire fighter buddies were his extended family.
Walt was a member of Union Park Grace Fellowship Church, he sang in the choir and held several positions within the church structure throughout the years. He was also a member of the Concrete Cruizers, Adelphic Lodge #509, Grand Lodge of Iowa and the ZaGaZig Shrine, reaching the position of 32nd degree consistory.
Walt leaves behind a true legacy; Carolyn, his wife of 50 years; daughter, Denise (Shawn) McFarland; son, Brian (Janel) Whitlatch; grandsons, Skyler, Samuel, Dylan, Spencer, Storm and Steele; and granddaughters, Sydney, Stella, Scout and Scarlett. He is also survived by his father, Charles Whitlatch, Sr.; brothers, David, Cliff, Alan and Hugh Whitlatch; sister, Kayla (Andy) Vaskis; plus a host of extended family members and many, many close friends, (church, firefighters and neighbors).
He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents and his mother, Betty.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 19, 2017 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home followed by burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Union Park Grace Fellowship Church, 832 Grandview, Des Moines, Iowa 50316 or Taylor House Hospice, 3401 E. Douglas, Des Moines, Iowa 50317.

Carolyn - we just returned from Arizona and was saddened to hear of Walt's passing. I cannot say I know how you feel because I have not experienced the death of a spouse. However, after 50 years of marriage you will have so many fond memories to keep him in your heart and mind forever. You and your family can find comfort in knowing he is definitely in good hands now and resting peacefully. God bless. Ruby

Walt was a true friend and brother to me and many others. You could always count on Walt. I worked with Walt on the Fire Dept and helped him with may projects at home. I went with him to car shows when he had his 57' and I had the old 51'. I have a lot of memories with Walt on and off the job. Walt was a true friend he believed in me when others didn't and I thank him for that. Take Care my friend.

Just a great guy with a wonderful family. Worked with him at St #1 on Pumper 10. Many memories. To many to mention. Admired by many because of his calmness in an emergency. His face seemed to have a smile on it more often than not. Oh ya! And his love for cheese sandwiches for dinner at the station. One of many great firefighters I have had the privilege to work for and with.

Carolyn, Denise, Shawn, Dylan and family, Our hearts are broken by the sudden death of Walt. As much as we see your family every Saturday for bowling over the past several years (8 I think), I feel like we're practically family. Every week our family shows up to Plaza Lanes, the first person we saw was Walt. He was prompt and ready to watch Dylan bowl. Walt was one of the most kind-hearted people I know. He was always smiling and loved to be there as Dylan's biggest bowling fan! We will miss him so much, and know that he will always be with us no matter where we go and will cherish all our memories of Walt. I'm so happy that our family had the pleasure of getting to know Walt. We pray that God provide you strength and comfort during this difficult time. Love you all!!

Walt was my District Chief during the time I was Captain at Firestation#5. He was a very careing and professional supervisor. Very well liked by myself , my crew and all fire personnel who knew him. I have a lot of excellent memories of Walt as I'm sure many others do. I am certainly glad our paths crossed along the way. Godbless...
