Service Details

Herbert. L. Snyder, an electrical engineer who served as ensign in the U.S. Navy at Pearl Harbor during World War II, died of natural causes in Yorba Linda, Calif, on Dec. 26, 2007. He was 91.
Born on May 16, 1916, Mr. Snyder lived most of his years in Norwalk, Iowa, where he grew up, raised a family, served on the city council, and eventually retired. Known to friends and family as Herb, he will be remembered fondly as an avid Hawkeye fan, a Ham radio enthusiast (W0OBX since 1934), and a teller of tall tales. Herb was a child of the depression and loved to tell of his many odd jobs that paid his way through four years at the University of Iowa, from which he graduated
with a B.S. in electrical engineering. And while tight with money, Herb was generous with his laugh, his bone-crushing hugs and hand shakes, and his love.
Lucky in love, Herb shared 40 happy years with the wife of his youth, Miriam Thorpe Snyder, with whom he had two children. After becoming a widower in 1980, he later fell in love with and married Maudie G. Halferty Snyder. Together they enjoyed their golden years, dancing, bowling and cheering at the home Hawkeye games. She, too, preceeded him in death, as did his sister Betty Moore.
He is survived by his other sister Maxine Cannon, of Richardson, TX, his son, Merrill H. Snyder, of Placentia, Calif., and his daughter, Donna K. Harrell, of Rocklin, Calif., as well as by three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5 at Hamilton's Southtown, 5400 S.W. Ninth St., Des Moines, Iowa. Burial will follow at Norwalk Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, Ill., 60601-7633 or by phone at (800) 272-3900.
