Imogene "Jean" Cook

Imogene “Jean” (Hegwood) Cook, 83, was born August 16, 1933, in Knoxville, Iowa, the daughter of Archilles and Flora (Austin) Hegwood. She passed away Thursday, January 12, 2017, at Parkridge Specialty Care in Pleasant Hill, Iowa.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 18, 2017, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, January 19, 2017, at Staves Memorial United Methodist Church, 2747 E Madison Ave, Des Moines, IA 50317, and will conclude at Oakwood Cemetery in Pleasant Hill.
Jean graduated from East High School in 1952. She worked in banking for many years before becoming a dental assistant, from which she retired. Jean loved her family above all else. She enjoyed traveling, especially on Amtrak, and spending time with friends at the Hy-Vee in Pleasant Hill. She was a member of Staves UMC for 64 years and served as a Sunday School teacher for that entire time. She was also involved in a number of women’s groups through the church. Jean was active with Pleasant Hill Lions Club and was named Volunteer of the Year in 2016. She was a member of the Pleasant Hill Women’s League, held positions on many committees for Pleasant Hill Parks & Recreation, and volunteered for Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge for many years.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Cecil; daughter, Melody (Red) Aswegan; sons, Archie (Lynn), Mitchell (Dawn), and Kelly; ten grandchildren: Cecil, Chad, Cory, Ryan, Andrea, Mystie, Kyle, Katie, Waylon, and Taven; 13 great-grandchildren: Carlie, Taylor, Aydan, Jacelyn, Jaxson, Brady, Sydney, Kaitlin, Abigail, Caleb, Maxx, Jett, and Tinlee; one sister; other siblings; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Archilles and Flora Hegwood and her step-father, Floyd Shannon.

I just heard today about my good friend Jean Cook. I can't even begin to express how very, very sorry I am. I've spent since Wednesday at the hospital with my daughter (Deb) who suffered a stroke. My heart goes out to the family.

Jean was such a beautiful person inside and out. I meant Jean when I started dating Mitch when we were in high school. She wanted me to call her mom from the very beginning. She was such a good grandma. She will be missed so very much.
