Abigail "Abby" Grace Nelson
December 30, 2016
God promised Abby that she could come home to Him, and on December 30, 2016, she did just that. Her life was full of challenges but she knew God was always with her. Her motto was to make the choice to live big every day and that each day was another chance to experience something new.
Abby accomplished much for one so young. Born August 19, 1993 to Kari (Lehmkuhl) and Mick Nelson, she graduated from Waukee High School and then Iowa State attaining her Bachelor’s in English Education. She interned with Disney’s Animal Kingdom and student taught at Roosevelt High School. She also volunteered in theatre and speech. In 2005, at a mere 12 year olds, Abby published a book “They Said It Wouldn’t Hurt (but it really did!) And I’m Still Fighting” to help others cope will fighting chronic disease.
As an English teacher at Indianola Middle School, Abby was passionate about teaching her students. She loved everything about teaching and coaching speech. Abby was an avid reader, and was never without a book in her hands. She was a fan of anything Disney, shopping, and spending time with her beloved family.
She will be greatly missed, but her family is comforted in the knowledge that she is healed and whole, and took her first painless breath. They look forward to the day when they will be reunited at home in heaven, ...SOARIN'. She is survived by her parents, Mick and Kari Nelson; sister, Sara Nelson; brother, Tim Nelson; her grandparents, Harold Nelson and Judy Lehmkuhl; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Abby was preceded in death by her grandparents, Virgina Nelson and Robert Lehmkuhl.
In lieu of flowers, memorial may be directed to Make a Wish Foundation or Camp Odayin. Condolences may be expressed online at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

Kari and mick,
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Abby was a very sweet girl from what I know from working with her at Hyvee. You did an amazing job raising a wonderful person and now that she is looking down on you, may she be your guardian angel and the light at the end of the tunnel when things get tough. May she Rest In Peace.

Ms. Nelson was the most happiest person in the whole middle school. She taught so many kids so many things not only about english but about life. I had her every other day and she was always helping the kids that needed help. It's so sad that she had to leave so soon but we know she is in a better place now. rest in peace Ms. Nelson you will be forever missed.

I think the Voice is like a TV show- but not to Indianola Middle School- Abby gave all kids at IMS a Voice to be heard, and to be cared about, and to Dream!
Abby was our Voice!
Thanks for sharing Abby with Indianola Middle School!

I am the teacher/mentor coordinator for Indianola Community Schools. I was reminded in today's service of how Abby displayed such confidence. The reminder came when the pastor told us that God has this. That is how Abby carried herself in the classroom: "I got this". It challenged me at first as her mentor but I persevered in opening that door to her classroom believing one day she might have something she might need support with. Her "I got this" was not implying knowing it all but stemmed I'm sure from all she had to overcome as she grew up. I'm confident in her place in heaven and I hear her saying, "I got this."

I am so very sorry that you lost your beautiful girl. Its not at all selfish, to miss her or wish she were here. Please be comforted by the lives that God used her to touch and the lives He used you all to touch through every part of her life. We will be praying for Gods comfort for you all. God bless you all.

As a special education teacher, I had the privilege of collaborating with Abby during her first year teaching at Indianola Middle School. We clicked almost immediately and worked so well together. She respected my opinions and feedback and it was truly a pleasure to work with her each day. She worked so hard for all kids and made differentiation a priority in her classroom. She listened to her students needs and created lessons that allowed all students to be supported so that they could be successful. Students learned to love literature in her class, but most of all they learned to be kind, compassionate and empathetic towards each other. She has left a hole that can never be filled. My deepest condolences to her loving family. I know she is at peace with God in heaven.
