Barbara Jean (Buban) Hans
November 25, 2016
Barbara Jean (Buban) Hans, 75, died Friday, November 25, 2016 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa. All services will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with the Funeral Mass on Monday, December 5, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. and on visitation Sunday, December 4 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. with a vigil service at 3:30 p.m.
Barbara was born March 3, 1941 in Centerville, Iowa. She grew up there and moved to Des Moines after attending graduate school. She was a psychologist for the Des Moines Public Schools her entire career where she touched many lives. Her passion for bettering the lives of others and community was evident as she was a member of so many organizations: Holy Trinity Catholic Church, CFM, Catholic Peace Ministry, DMARC, Beaverdale Neighborhood Association and Polk County Master Gardeners. She was most proud to have been named by Bishop Dingman to the Diocesan Priests’ Peace and Justice Committee and the Task Force for Justice for Women where she was a founding member.
Barbara loved gardening at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, the Greater Des Moines Botanical Center, and in Allenspark, Colorado. She also enjoyed her book clubs, knitting, daily walks and yoga. She supported the less fortunate through her work with CFUM, Catholic Worker House, and the women’s prison in Mitchellville. Most of all, Barbara enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Barbara is survived by her daughter, Andrea (Ron) Burnette; son, Adam; and grandchildren, Christian and Ryan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gil; mother, Liz (Morris) Buban; and brother, Michael Buban.
Memorial contributions may be made to Polk County Master Gardener Discovery Gardens, Beaverdale Neighborhood Association Beautification Committee, Children and Family Urban Ministries, Catholic Peace Ministry or DM Catholic Worker.

Andrea and Adam,
We were so sorry to learn of your mother's passing. We have such great memories of your parents through Area 10 CFM activities. Barb challenged us in so many ways. She was a great activist - and a wonderful example for so many of us. We still remember The Today show calling the National CFM Office and looking for a family that ate together to appear on one of their shows. We were proud to have her and Adam represent CFM. She was a blessing to many.

Our prayers and thoughts go out to Andrea and Adam and all the family and friends who will miss Barb very much. She was a remarkable person whose care of and service to the world around her were an inspiration for all of us. May God richly bless her and all of her family. I knew Barb years ago at Holy Trinity and then more recently through PCMG. It was a great pleasure getting to see her in action again!

Thoughts and prayers are with Andrea and Adam and families. Your mother was a special woman who cared for all living things people and plants. We will miss seeing her on our walks through Beaverdale and hearing her opinion on things in the neighborhood. May she rest now in God's hands.

I'm so sorry to hear of Barb's death. We worked together at Smouse School a million years ago. She was a great psychologist and had a wonderful sense of humor. I remember that she and her family were on a TV show (perhaps the Today show,I'm not sure) to discuss the fact that they all ate dinner together every night. I know that Barb was a great mom; she spoke often of her children.
