Carol Brown

Carol Brown, 76, passed away September 19, 2016. Services will be held Thursday, September 22 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, IA with visitation from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and the service at 12:00 p.m. Burial will be at Sunny Hill Cemetery in Grimes, IA.
Carol was born February 20, 1940 in Hollis, OK to Zola M. (Kelly) and Ivan D. Cates. She attained her Bachelor’s degree in 1961 and Master’s degree in Education in 1974 at Southwestern Oklahoma State University and taught at various schools and levels. She began her teaching career in 1961 in Monte Vista, CO as a kindergarten teacher. Carol taught 2nd and 3rd Level Innovative School in Oklahoma City from 1962-66. Carol moved back to her hometown with her husband and family and taught Special Education from 1971-78 and 4th Grade from 1978-1994 in Weatherford, OK. Carol was also designated as an Oklahoma City Public Schools Master Teacher. She was an innovative teacher with a tremendous spirit. Carol loved the children she taught like her own.
In her personal life, Carol enjoyed a variety of interests. She was Miss Southwestern in 1958 as well as 2nd Runner Up in the Miss Oklahoma Pageant in 1958. She was a talented artist, avid history buff and a student of history. One of her greatest joys was sharing stories with her grandchildren. Carol was very proud of her family and was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who dearly loved her family.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Talbert Brown; her children, Scott (Rhonda) Brown and Russell (Martha) Brown; grandchildren, Aaron, Sarah, Nathan and Alaina Brown. Carol was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, David Cates.

Talbert -- so very sorry to hear of Carol's passing. She was a talented beauty, and I know she was your world. Now you'll have to carry on for your family, as best you can. Remember the good times, and take care until we meet (and sing) again !

Dear Talbert, I was so sad to hear this news from Dan. I have thought often about those Chem. Dept. years at SWOSU and wondered how you two and your family were doing. My main memory of Carol is how James loved her as his 4th gr. teacher.
