Service Details

Oscar D. “Bud” Overton, 74, died Wednesday, March 9, 2016. Christian and Masonic services will take place at 1:00 p.m. Monday, March 14, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street in Des Moines. Cremation to follow. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 13.

Bud was born October 13, 1941 in Fairbury, Nebraska to Oscar Wyld Overton and Elta Sisler Overton. This was also his mother’s 41st birthday. He graduated from Fairbury High School in 1960. He married his high school sweetheart, Sheila Nance on January 12, 1962.

Bud went to work for the Rock Island Railroad on September 2, 1960 and was employed as an engineer when the railroad went bankrupt in 1980. He loved the Rock Island and said the men there were true professionals. He then worked as an engineer for the C&NW RR and then for the Iowa Interstate Railroad, until being disabled in November 1997.

He enjoyed his time with his family since retiring, also fishing, reading, and Masonic activities. Bud was a member and Past Master of Home Lodge #370 AF&AM in Pleasant Hill, York Rite in Newton, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, and White Shrine. He regretted he didn’t discover Masonry 25 years sooner! He was also a member of NARVRE, United Transportation Union, AARP, National Rifle Association, and Friends of Bill W.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Sheila Lavon (Nance) Overton; children, Anita Lavon McGehee (Robert), Tommy Dean Overton (Michelle), Kathy Marie Elliott (Jason), and Scott Dale Overton (Julie Griffin); 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either Home Lodge #370 or Shriners Hospital for Children.
