Barbara Gourd
Des Moines
Barbara Jean Gourd, 84, passed away suddenly Sunday, January 17, 2016, after suffering a heart attack in her home in south Des Moines.
The third child in a family that ultimately included seven loving siblings, Barbara was born at home in the Knoxville, Iowa area to parents, Dorothy (Roorda) and Frederick Glover. The family later moved to Des Moines, and Barbara graduated from East High School. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Des Moines, where her friendliness made her a popular member of the youth and young adult programs and activities.
Barbara married Weldon Gourd and they set up their home in Des Moines, where they welcomed their son, Gregory, and two daughters, Kristi and Allison. Barbara loved to read, and she used her always-active imagination and talent for crafts to create artistic items from practically nothing.
Throughout happy times and struggles, Barbara always strove to be a good daughter, a good wife, and a good mother. She will be remembered and missed by all those who were fortunate enough to know her.
Following Barbara’s wishes for privacy, she was cremated, and the family will hold a private memorial service at a time yet to be determined.
Barbara was predeceased by her parents, Dorothy and Fred Glover; sisters, Marilyn Glover of Knoxville and Darlene Jaques of Des Moines; and brothers, James and Wayne Glover, both of California.
Barbara is survived by her children, Gregory Gourd, Kristi White, and Allison Welty and seven grandchildren.
