Larry Byers, 64, passed away Monday, November 16, 2015 at Unity Point Health Des Moines Methodist Hospital.
Larry was born August 30, 1951 in Des Moines to Lawrence and Hazel Byers. He was a proud graduate of Lincoln High School, class of 1969. Larry had just retired in October from Children and Families of Iowa, where he worked in the maintenance department for 25 years. He was a former member of the Izaak Walton League. Larry was a great storyteller. He always had a joke, some good, some bad but he lived life to its fullest and never met a stranger. Larry enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family and friends. He also loved trains, planes, automobiles, photography and history.
Larry is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Patty; son, Jamie (Tracey) Byers; grandson, Jamie Byers; granddaughters, Kayla and Sara Byers; nieces, Stacy and Stephanie and their families; in-laws, Dennis and Marge Lowry; and a host of extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughters, Jody and Kimberly Byers; grandson, Christopher Byers; sister, Nancy Griggs; and his aunt and uncle, Pearl and Dean Byers.
A memorial visitation will be held from 12 to 2 p.m. Saturday, November 21, 2015 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street.

Patty, so sorry for your loss, I can't even imagine the pain & loss in your life these last few years. My most heartfelt condolences to you, as well as so much Love. Hope the weather doesn't prevent me from seeing you tomorrow, I'll be there with my thoughts & wishes if it does.

You will be missed by so many. Larry I don't think you ever realized how many lives you touched through CFI. I know us at the shelter thought a lot of you and you brightened my day when I saw you. I remember the last time I saw you, you threw your baby bells at me and said these don't even taste good. It was the little things you said or did that made me laugh. I never imagined I wouldn't see you again or tell you about my trip to Disney. To his family I'm thinking of all of you. Rest in Peace Larry!!!

Oh - the one liners, the stories - some that almost never ended - the eye rolls after my bad jokes and the laughs are just a few things I will miss about Larry. Much love to you as always. Jingling Jesus RIP.

Sven and Ollie got a new job at a ladies undergarments factory as "Diesel Fitters". Sven takes a freshly made pair of ladies drawers off of the line and puts them on Ollie's head. If they fit, Ollie says, "Ya, Diesel Fitter!" and they pass inspection and are sent to the store.
Sometimes when someone asks me what I do for a living, I tell them I'm a Diesel Fitter so I can tell them that awful joke.
Larry would randomly show up at my house in the middle of the day to bring me gems like this. There are literally hundreds of them.
I'll miss you, Larry. Tell Kimmy she still owes me $20.

Larry was the type of person who just jumped in and helped without being asked. He saw I had a phone book under my computer and made me a wooden stand! Larry always had a smile and greeting, sometimes a song or joke too ;) He never failed to brighten my day! I'll miss him so much! Please know your family is in my thoughts and prayers. Take Care

Larry's ability to persevere is not something seen very often in people. We had the opportunity to see that in him often here at Children & Families of Iowa. He will be missed and my prayers are for the family to get through this difficult time now and in the future.

From the first day I met him when I joined the DVS team at CFI he always made me smile and laugh. I so appreciate all he did for us at shelterland.
His silly jokes and smile will be greatly missed.

Larry is missed at the CFI office in Fort Dodge. He didn't have to come here much but we enjoyed his visits when he did. Great sense of humor and he always teased me about my choice in NASCAR drivers. Prayers for his family and friends.
