Evelyn Elaine Lyons passed away surrounded by her family’s love on Friday, November 6, 2015 at Kavanagh on 56th. She was born on July 28, 1938 in Des Moines.
Evelyn married William Lyons, Jr. on May 2, 1953. She was a loving mother and loved her grandkids dearly. She enjoyed playing with the grandkids just as she used to with her boys. Evelyn was a good cook. She loved animals and enjoyed going to Prairie Meadows. Through the years she worked for the DSM Public Schools, Diamond Laboratories, Artcraft Printing, JC Penney and Katecho. Evelyn was very proud of her boys and their families and will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 8, 2015 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 9, 2015 at the funeral home. She will be laid to rest at Glendale Cemetery.
Those left to cherish her life are her sons, Danny (Sharon) Lyons and Randy (Judy) Lyons; grandchildren, BJ (Laurie) Lyons, Matthew (Marcella) Lyons, Michael (Niki) Lyons, Megan Lyons and Keri (Eric) Kenoyer; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Alex, Sophie, Gaige, Ethan, Kaleb, Mekallo, Nitzeo and Harlow; siblings, Mary Picray, Yvonne Senger, Ilene Belieu and Nick Bishop; and a host of extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, Bill; infant son, Billy Lee; her parents and two brothers.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.

My memories of my Aunt Evelyn include the Lions that defined her house, always making it easy to find, "King" and her love of German Shepherds, the plates and plates of homemade Christmas cookies she baked every year for Bills customers, friends, & family at the DX Station, her little white Ked tennis shoes in summer, her pristine autos that never exceeded the speed limits and never knew rain, and of a cozy kitchen table that welcomed every guest with good conversation and hot coffee.
Aunt Evelyn was a warm, happy, generous woman who could barely speak a paragraph without finding the humor in it, and who could make you smile with her distinct chuckle & her infectious laugh no matter how difficult times might be, or how ordinary the situation.
Her illness was a shock and a terrible injustice to those of us counting on her wit, humor, and love to weather us thru the inevitable valleys to come. And for her young family it was simply too soon. But through it all, Aunt Evelyn was a trooper, totally brave, still onery, and full of love to the very end.
Today I see my Aunt Evelyn in Heaven, getting comfortable, saying something like, "this aint so bad" or "where's Elvis, aint he 'sposed to be up here!?" punctuated by her classic little chuckle, while trying to find a slot machine (because it 'is' heaven, afterall) and hoping that 'nowhere in heaven' will she EVER be asked to back an automobile down a long, steep driveway in a timely fashion to get 'anywhere'!!!
Aunt Evelyn had a very grounded and practical sense of life and death. Understanding our grief she would want us to move on, simply saying, "life is short, ya know!?"
I'm certain that Heaven is a little brighter now, and her being there, lighting the way, gives us no excuse not to find it.
My love, prayers, warmest regards and prayer for peace to the loves of her life she leaves behind. She had tiny feet but very big shoes. And what wonderful memories and stories you all have to always give you joy and to make you smile! ...her spirit is alive and well and multiplied by all of you! There's no better legacy than that!!!

My deepest Condolences to the family. It was a great pleasure to have known Evelyn for she was such a warm loving lady. She won my heart the day she opened her arms to my grandsons and Laurie as her family and loved them as her own. I couldnt have choose a better grandma for them. I will miss her sweet warm smile.
