Sheryl Mellor

Sheryl Mellor, 71, of Mitchellville died July 11, 2015 at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines. Sheryl was a 1962 graduate of Mitchellville HS and the American Institute of Business in 1963. She worked at Roto Rooter Corporation for 34 years and retired in 2005. She was a fan of most every sport, especially golf and college basketball. She would wake up in the middle of the night to see a tournament begin in Australia or stay up late to see it finish in Hawaii. She was a member of the Terrace Hills Ladies Golf League and was known for throwing a club occasionally. She also enjoyed a day of poker with her friends, but only if she won and took their money. She was an active Gold Card-carrying member of Prairie Meadows and a dedicated volunteer and Treasurer for the Mitchellville Community Center. The light of her life were her grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter, DeAnne (Terry) Sesker, and their children Abbie and Austin, all of Mitchellville. She is also survived by her poker and golf “sisters” Connie Wieslander, Linda Larson, Sharon Ringstad, Sandy Carter, Kate Johnson, and LaRee Cory; and her childhood friend Sue (Heingardner) Abarquez.

Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Tuesday, July 14, 2015 with services Wednesday, July 15 each at Hamilton’s Funeral Home in Altoona. A celebration of life will be held at the Mitchellville Community Center following the graveside service at the Colfax Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the Mitchellville Community Center or Taylor House Hospice.
